Bar Spacing

I found an amazing deal for a huge cage on craigslist. I asked loads of questions about the cage (i.e. what happened to the previous occupant, why are you getting rid of the cage, ect.) and was told the Gray that lived in the cage had died from an infection because of a dog bite. One thing that worries me is the spacing of the bars. It's 3/4 inch. Is that too big for a Jenday? If the cage is alright for Con, I plan on buying it but also would like some advice on what to clean it with. I was thinking a round of bleach, then vinegar, then Poop Off then water. Is that overkill or not enough or the wrong thing to use? Thanks!

Steam cleaning is good if you can manage it.

3/4" might be too big. It would be for a Green Cheek for sure. I would go look at it, but if you think his head might fit between the bars, I'd pass on that one. If they get stuck, they could panic and even break their neck. Plus it might be hard for him to climb well with that big of spacing. Conures don't have big feet compared to Greys and amazons.

I agree that 3/4" is too big for a Green Cheek, but I think it would be fine for a Jenday.

Alex's (jenday) first cage had 2.5cm (roughly 3/4 inch) spacing and was/is fine (Still use it when at my parents, it lives there as the 'holiday cage')

His new AE cage has half inch spacing. I prefer it as I feel it is safer, but I think Alex liked the 3/4 better because he could fit his whole beak out for tongue scratches!

We did have a cage with 1inch spacing that was too big, but again Alex is on the small size for a jenday. I know others with suns who have the same cage and it is perfect, but their birds are quite large.

I think you will be ok with the 3/4. And look on the bright side, if by some chance it is too big, you got a bargain and you could probably turn around and sell it and get your money back anyway

I think the spacing is just wide enough for her to get her beak through. I measured the spacing of her current cage and its 1/2 and she can barely get her beak through it. The only thing about me buying this cage is after I clean it, it's going into my storage unit. It's too big for where I live now and Con can't be in any room other than mine. Once I move out of my uncle's house and back to my hometown, I plan on renting a house. I'll have more space for the cage there and it'll look nice in the corner of my living room. Then Con's old cage can become a cage for a GC

As for steam cleaning the cage, that isn't an option. I'm just gonna put it in the backyard and scrub it with bleach, rinse, then let it set for a couple days.

I got this cage off Craigslist. It was the exact cage I was looking for, and I got it for half the price. It is 32x24x67" with 47" interior. Bar spacing is 5/8". Big cage for a Yellow Sided GCC, but Maxx LOVES every inch of it.

Fippin' Sweet! I love corner cages! I'm looking into getting one VERY soon. Such space savers and yet still lots of room! I would've bought it in a heartbeat.

I'm most likely going to buy it. I just want to go see it first and see first hand what condition it might be in. I'm still stunned that the owner is only asking $125 for it.

I originally wanted a corner cage instead of my kind of fugly, but huge and very practical A+E made cage. (Well, the cage itself is lovely, the stand is a little ugly though, lol!) I think they are great! Not only are they easy to tuck away, but the bird can still see the whole room, and once set up in a corner they look great! Only downside is I would recommend draping a towel or sheet over the sides that are against/near the wall. Out little feathered friends tend to poop on the walls otherwise while climbing the sides! Even when you think you have it a safe distance away!

A great way to clean the cage is Pet Focus aviary and cage cleaner. It is great, my vet told me about it. It kills mold, bacteria, well really everything! You can order it online from Mango Pet Products Inc. and many other places. Also the cage should be just find for a Jenday and a great price. Spend a little extra to get the cleaner so you know it is safe for your bird.

Thanks for the info! I put some in my cart on Amazon (shipping was WAY cheaper). I'm thinking I'll go look at the cage today since it's my day off. I'm a bit worried to go though since I've never answered an online ad before. Guess I'll let my Grandma know to call the police if I'm not back in an hour lol
