Sprite the cinnamon green cheek conure.
Long time no speak!!
Well today I went to drop off Sprite to be boarded. I was going to board him at the place I got him, which is a wonderful little bird store, and the first one I ever went to (played a big role in my love of parrots).
Today, I wasnt happy....
I got there, and no one I knew was there (there are 2 people that are my favorite, the owner and the manager, they know much more compared to everyone else there and they are super nice)
Well.....the lady there is the owners daughter. She directed us to this back room (Like back back, no one goes there) and they wanted to stick him in a TEENY cage and it was dark and lonely (only 1 bird in sight). The cage was like 12x12 Dx So I left....
NOT happy.

That sounds horrible, I'm so glad you didn't leave him there with them! Are you going to contact the owner and talk to them about this? Luckily, I've never gone anywhere that I've had to board any of our birds but I think I would rather keep them at home and have someone trusted come and care for them than have them boarded somewhere completely strange to them. Do you have any friends that show even the slightest interest in birds? You could always teach them what to do and explain what you want done in an emergency, etc. Maybe find someone that would be willing to stay at your place while you're gone?

Goodness sakes! Definitely a walk away moment for sure!

I've been wondering how things were going for you, you used to be on the boards all the time asking questions, then you got Sprite and haven't hardly heard from you.

I suppose you've just been spending all your spare time with Sprite :D

So is conure ownership everything you thought it'd be??

sorry to hear you had such a bad experience hopefully you will be able to find someone to look after your bird. is there a bird rescue near you maybe they can board your bird for a while for you? or breeders that live nearby? Teenagers are usually eager to make some money maybe there are some trustworthy kids in the neighbourhood you could ask?

Wow... that is pretty horrible. I would have left, too.

Our local bird store lets us bring our own cage, toys, etc. It's also less costly than using one of their cages. We boarded our baby girl over the holidays, and the place was filled with parrots of all sorts who were also boarding. I was given an index card to fill in any special instructions in regard to handing, diet, etc.

Sorry you had such a bad experience. The vet clinic I work at is not an avian vet, but we have boarded some parrots on a few occasions. Then the clients started asking me to watch the parrots in my home which of course I agreed to! If you still need to board Sprite you might ask around at some Vet clinics. Even if they are not avian vets, they may know of someone or have an employee that deals with birds to take care of him. Good luck!

Lexx, I notice you're in the Bay Area. If you're in the South Bay, check out Greenman Pet Services - they do home visits for our flock when we're out of town, and they own ~15 birds themselves. Can't recommend them enough!

Well pretty much I feel like before I got Sprite I wanted to know ALL about what it was like but now I know and I havent had any problems so i havent really needed to :)

YESSS I love him <3 Ive had him for like 3 months but I feel so close to him. Hes out like ALL the time, except when Im at school, but my mom does take him out sometimes.

Dont worry, my dad is taking care of him. Ohh, and something else thats awesome is that, he is TOTALLY a family bird. Even when strangers come over, he'll happily sit on anyone. Although, my mom says that he is better behaved when im around

Awwww...I'm glad to hear it. Conures are great socializers, at least most of them are. I know our Franklin will go to anyone who comes over, but when I take him out bye bye, like to the stores and such, he clings to me like glue.

He's very much attached to me, but I made sure from the beginning, that everyone in our house handled him because I didn't want him to become a one person bird.

He definitely shows favortism to me, my husband can have him out while I'm gone and when Franklin hears me come in, my husband says he looses all interest in what he was doing and just starts looking and watching for me to come through the door. :rainbow1:

Obviously all the studying, researching and questions you've asked over the months helped to prepare for a successful relationship with Sprite.

I'm so proud of you!

Toni
