Feeding Times?

Hi everyone, I'm new here. We'll be getting a sun conure in a couple of weeks. We're just waiting for him to be weaned. He's 3 months old now. I'm trying to learn as much as I can before we bring him home. I was reading a book about conures and it seemed to indicate, for feeding, that I could give him maybe pellets in the morning before I leave for work, and then when I come home from work I could give him some seed, fresh vegetables, fruits, other fresh foods, etc.. My question is, do I leave the pellets in there to stay and then add to it in the morning, or pull it from the cage, dump, and pour fresh ones in the morning?

Also, regarding water, the book seemed to indicate to use a water bottle instead of the water dishes. Any suggestions regarding water?

Thanks for all the help.

You could leave the pellets in the dish as long as it didn't get wet and spoiled. I dump out the crumbs when it's empty then refill it in small portion. You try to maintain the freshness so you don't want to over fill it. I would skip the seeds and only give it as a treat and stick with just pellets. Fresh fruits and veggies can be given in a separate dish and dump out the left over when he's finished. Water dish is really up to the individual to decide. I like the water dish and I clean it on a daily basis and use only filtered water. I have used water bottle in the past, it helped me quite a bit when I used to breed, There's a lot of birds to feed and water on a daily basis when you have hundreds....But I really do prefer dishes. Give fresh water before work and fresh water after you get off work.

I leave pellets in all day, and mine all get their healthy human foods mostly in the evening. They might get a bit at lunch as well, but I'm home all day to do that.

I also prefer water dishes. You will find conures are water babies and will often use theirs to bathe as well. Mine also likes to dunk some of her pellets in it to moisten them. It does mean I need to wash the dish and change the water more than once a day, but she enjoys these activities.

I agree with the above posts. I have pellets available 24/7, and change with needed, usually every other day. I put in enough to cover the bottom of the dish and it seems to work out. I also use filtered water and do change it a few times a day as Maxx loves to dunk his food and take bathes in it. I usually give Maxx so birdie bread in the morning, and fresh veggies, or fruit later in the day.

for my birds, it's 24/7 pellets, fresh fruit in the morning, cooked food in the evening plus whatever we're having for dinner and then Kevin gets his baby food before bed.

That's a lot of food, but my conure is finally off seeds so he's lost weight transferring, so the extra feedings are to get weight back on him.

I leave food in the cage 24/7 as well and my birds get to share breakfast , lunch and dinner with me plus whatever snacks i have and get fresh fruit and veggies every day as well. Mine are a bit spoiled since i am disabled i can give them that amount of attention. My conure wont let me eat anything without insisting he gets some too and since i eat in bed and his cage is beside my bed he gets fed a lot!

But in your case i would say leaving a dish of food in there and filling as needed and giving fresh water as often as needed is good and then anything else you wanna give as long as it is bird safe :)
