I heard that protein is good for a bird while its molting. I found some Egg Food at the Petco I visited and just want some opinions and advice on whether I should supplement Con with the Egg Food. Thanks!

Well, they do need some protein, although not huge amounts like cats or dogs. It should be about 5% of the diet outside of their pellets.

I haven't tried the egg food, but I have given them scrambled eggs (I crush up the shell into them as well for extra calcium), chicken, turkey and cooked beans. I guess Merlin also likes to chew on chicken bones. So at least once in awhile I guess I'd better buy chicken with bones in it. Rowdy does not care for meat, but she does like the beans.

It is so easy to include protein in their regular foods I do not bother with supplements. Like Rox says eggs are good.

Everytime I've given Rowdy chicken or turkey, she has tasted it and eaten a bit, but she will look at me like, "Why are trying to make me a cannibal?"

I've been adding scrambled eggs with the shell to her fresh breakfast every morning but was just curious. Glad I didn't buy it before asking you guys lol

You really don't have to add anything more to your birds diet especially if it's balanced. Molting is a normal part of a parrots life, they are replacing feathers almost daily. It isn't really recommended to give egg everyday either. A parrot feeding chicks yes but not a companion.

Usually if offered a well balanced diet with lots of fresh leafy greens, other veggies & a bit fruit & pellets. I also add a good quality small parrot seed & sprouts, I don't have to worry about any extra's when my birds are molting.

I only give the egg food ( we call it egg & biscuit) to the budgies when they have chicks. I don't give to my other parrots. However i do boil up an egg & give it to my breeding eclectus hens when they have chicks but only ever once a week.

When my birds are not breeding they go on a maintenance diet, it also helps tone down the raging hormones when there isn't an abundance of food offered.
