It's gotta be Karma...

So...just gonna start off by saying I don't really like Sun Conures. I don't care for the pitch of their scream and the color doesn't really catch my eye.

Anyway, if you read my post on adding another bird, you'd know I've been going around to pet stores meeting other Conures. I went back to the closest Petco and took Con with me this time to see if they'd let her meet their birds. They had two GC, a Maroon Belly, and a year old Sun Conure. Con met all of them starting with the GC's. She didn't care for them one bit and just pushed at them with her beak and squabbled at them. Same with the maroon belly. Reluctantly, I asked to see the Sun and of course it was instant love for her. She couldn't get enough of him(?) and they followed each other up and down my arms, across my shoulders and into my hood. Of course she's fall for a Sun! GAH!

But here is the kicker. Right as I was getting ready to leave, the employee hurries over and says that his manager would take 20% of the Sun if I'd take him. Con chose that moment to be super cute and rub against my cheek and croon. I sighed and asked to see the Sun again so that I could meet him. He's a really laid back bird, very good at stepping up and is just so fluffy and in nice feather. His beak and nails are a bit over grown and he's gonna be a year old on 2/11 but other than that...I kinda like him. I just really hope it isn't a him cause I don't want any little Sunday Conures! They were also doing the head chugging motion that chicks do but with each other. Anyone know what it may mean?

I would really like some advice or input or anything really. I just need someone(s) to talk this decision over with. Thanks!

It would seem so lol I can't figure out if it's a good or bad thing though. I've started looking at Sun conure breeders and doing all the stuff I did when I was unsure of getting Con. Somehow I just know this bird is going to end up with me somehow.

I second that....if you were already thinking of another bird, I say go for it!

Sounds like Con made up her mind! I say go for it, I don't care for suns either, I think they are beautiful birds but I'm with you on their squeal. But I think if the bird is happy and well socialized there really isn't a reason for him to be screaming, especially if your house is pretty calm. We have 13 birds now and aside from the budgie chatter, you would never really know we had them, except when we get them going.

It does surprise me that they let you take con in to meet their birds. I'm sure that con is healthy and all but if they let you take her back, chances are they let other people take their birds in as well which leaves them very susceptible to illness within their bird room. Seems a little risky on their part.

Roommate said absolutely not on me getting another bird I was starting to warm up to the idea of having a Sun and it's my dream to have a flock of three (at least for now ).

IcyWolf, I was thinking the same thing as I left the store. I'm gonna keep a close eye on Con for the next couple weeks just to be safe. Anything out of the ordinary and off to the vet she goes!

Well, I would definitely recommend they be the same gender so they don't mate bond and possibly mate. Rowdy loves Suns, too. I had reservations though thinking they might have screech contests. She always screeches back to the ones she sees and hears on TV. She did well with the Blue Crown, who was not a screechy kind of conure, but I always figured bringing in another Nanday, a Sun or a Jenday could make things intolerably loud at least some of the time. Something to think about there. And I've never wanted to breed birds, especially hybrid ones.

Sure, it can be loud when all 3 of my birds are vocalizing and competing with each other, but at least it's not 3 screeching conures

Jenday screams are near identical to conure ones. Slightly lower in pitch (Or, at least Alex's is, he's the only jenday I hear scream regularly!) So just imagine having two Cons for an idea of the noise

On potential breeding though,

SunxJenday are subspecies of the same species, so if they were to breed it's not hybridising as per say, as they are technically not of different species, rather species undergoing speciesisation (give a few thousand more years in their native environment and the subspecies would most likely continue to diverge and eventually become different enough to not interbreed, and therefore be separate species descendent from a common species) where sun and jenday populations overlap in the wild there are sunxjenday matings, which result in sundays, which then either renter the sun or jenday population. that's while wild populations of 'suns' can have variable amounts of green on their wings, because of jenday attributes. This wild sun, for example has more green then typically on our captive ones. Maybe one parent many gens ago was part jenday, maybe he is 'pure' sun and just shows a different genetic combo? Who knows.



Here is a captive 'type' for comparison.


Captive birds tend to be selected for less green I've noticed. For many reasons, mainly more yellow is generally seen as more attractive, and hence fetches a higher price, and it is also the mark of a 'pure type' sun to breeders (while that is not necessarily true) as birds with more green are usually labeled part jenday, even when not true. Also, most domestic stock originates from imports, and very yellow stock is believed to be the founder stock. And the genetic range of domestic birds is belived to be smaller then wild (descending from a relatively small group) so yellow seems to be a rather 'set' trait.



That said though, finding pure sun subspecies and pure jenday subspecies is apparently getting harder and harder, so breeding pure is always the best bet to ensure we continue to have both 'types' of the Aratinga Sol complex (which jendays and suns are a part of, along with possibly gold caps) in captivity, and not only a mid way 'type'. However, sunxjenday is a whole different kettle of fish to interspecies hybrids, IMHO.

There's no way I could convince her to let me have another. She's pretty set on not living in a "zoo". But you don't hear me saying no to her wanting a dog (I really don't like dogs) and then keeping it outside all year. I don't think you should get an animal then leave it outside and ignore it so I'm secretly hoping the rescue in our town says no to adopting to her. I'll be driving to my hometown on Friday so her and I can start talking about what our living arraignments will be. I may end up paying more rent than her because she refuses to get a better paying job than what she has now. She's afraid it will stifle her creativity. If it comes to that, I will be getting my damn Sun!

Sorry...just really needed to rant. Maybe I should just get a house for myself if she's going to act like a child...

since when does a couple of pets mean a zoo? If you can afford it and you really want it I would consider your own place or at least weigh your options.

I have a yorkie, 2 cats, a hedgehog and a parrot soon..so I guess if you would be a zoo I am a wildlife refuge LOL

I don't know how I qualify for a zoo. I thought I needed a zebra and maybe a lion or two to be a zoo If I get the job I'm going to apply for Friday, I can afford my own place easily but her and I just planned on being roommates once I came back home. I don't want to be if it means that I have to listen to someone tell me what I can and can't have. That's why I moved out on my own when I turned 17 and I plan to keep my independence to make my own decisions.

But than again she's allergic to cats and she's not making me get rid of them thought I'm spending loads of money to get air filters and a good vacuum just so she isn't miserable. GAH! This is just making me mad!

There's gonna have to be. She's never lived on her own and she's 23 (2 years older than me) and because she's older she thinks she makes the decisions. We're going to sit down and talk about what we want from the other, put it in writing and sign it. I would feel safer with a "contract" of sorts but our problem mainly rests with the animals. I want another bird while she wants to get a dog and put up about 5 fish tanks. I feel like I'm banging my head against a wall.

I think that putting it on a contract is a great idea. I also agree that if you are going to pay more than her, you should be allowed to have your second conure.

You're the only other person who thinks the contract is a good idea lol I want it so that neither of is can try and get away with something and so we have ground rules that can't be broken.

My dad said he's help with rent until I got my steady paychecks coming in so either way, she's still getting off without paying as much. I either need to look at a different house or she's gonna have to give in to me having another bird. Rent is only $750 and that includes utilities. We'd have to split that and she says $375 is too much. It's a two bedroom duplex...

If she says 375 is too much, she's going to complain about the other things she has to buy. What happens when she doesn't want to help pay for grocheries? The electric bill? I don't know your situation with her, but if it was me I would be looking for a new roomate. Or I would get it in writing! I don't have a written agreement with my sister, who rents from me, but I knew I wasn't going to have issues with her. If I ever rent to anyone else however, I'll have a lease.

I am assuming you will both be on the lease?

If thats too much for her, the first vet visit with that dog is oing to be a bit of a shock.
