Conures and other species?

RIP Constantine: Jenday Conure
Been thinking about what other birds I want to get if I'm able to get my aviary up by summer. I want something larger than a Conure yet not too large like a Macaw. I was looking at a lilac crowned amazon, a Gray, an Eclectus or a Ringneck.

My problem is I can't find anything online about having conures with other birds that are a bit larger and would like some info and advice. They will all be out together in the aviary but will have separate cages when inside.

All thoughts, ideas, info, and advice is welcomed! Thanks!

PS- An update on my little Sun. The store still hasn't told me what was on the blood test or if she's ready. I'll keep calling thought and hoping for the best!

Well, that's annoying as far as your Sun is concerned.

I will say having conures with larger birds can be a problem. Conures think they are much bigger than they are and think nothing of bossing a bigger bird around. I do have concerns that Rowdy could end up getting hurt if she goes after one of the big birds and it defends itself. We have a member here who has had that happen twice with her GCC. However, Rowdy seems to like having them around. When Pete hangs upside down and does his "batman" routine, she imitates him back, doing the same. He did try to go visit her one day last week, but I stopped him before he got to her cage. She did seem receptive to him coming over, but I know how territorial she can be. I worried if he climbed up onto her cage, which I'm sure he was about to do, that she would bite and he would bite her back.

So at this point, and possibly forever, I'm not yet letting them out together. Maybe I could if I kept both her and Pete clipped, but I don't want to clip her. As for Pete I'm letting him grow his wings back right now and we shall see what happens once he does. For all I know he doesn't know how to fly and never will try.

I would have to agree. Conures can be bullies and larger or smaller birds could get hurt. It does depend on the size of the aviary, ive seen multiple species mixed with conures, but i would advise against it. Even different species of conures could b an issue.

Well, if they are about the same size, at least it's a fair fight. Birds often bicker among their flock members. But, when a large bird bites a smaller one, really bad things can happen. Many conures have had their upper beaks ripped right off by a larger bird. And of course toes and even feet can be bitten off.

The aviary is going to be 22L x 22W x 15H with some small trees and a bird bath and a strawberry plant for foraging and lots of toys and branches and perches. I don't want anyone to get hurt so I'd be out with them or I could have my two conures and get a pair of amazons or grays and rotate days they can be out? I'd be willing to expand my flock to 4 if it means they're all happy. I'd be happy with 4 conures but I don't like any others but Jendays and Suns and I really want a Gray. What about a ringneck with the conures?

Well, it's possible they would all get along fine. Before I brought home Pete I read that if amazons can't be with other amazons, that they like conures. Pete definitely likes Rowdy. I'm more concerned that it is Rowdy that could get bossy, and if she does, he will defend himself. He does with the cat when she terrorizes him. He gives back just as good as he gets. In fact now he even initiates terror games with the cat for fun. I just don't want to be heartbroken if something really bad happened to Rowdy for just being Rowdy.

IRNs seem to have similar attitudes to conures. That might be a good mix. So might Quakers if you are allowed to have them.

Well, my Conures are bossy of course and don't care what size the opponent is! So they take turn coming out. The Pionus and Caiques come out together while the Conures are in (as they will antagonize and fight). However, when the Conures are out, I can leave my Grey out as well. They are not friends but they keep their distance from one another. The Conures leave the Grey alone and the Grey stay away as well. The ones that are the most trouble are the Caiques!!!

I heard that the IRNs are not good with other birds.

I'm really not interested in another conure other than a Sun to go with Con. I might just get a Timneh and sit in the aviary with the 3 of them when they're all out together to keep an eye on them. The last thing I want is an injured or dead bird. Also, Con and my possible Sun wouldn't be able to fly in the aviary until next year when they have their flights back.

Well, I would say based on my couple of months with Merlin that I don't see her being antagonistic at all, but that still doesn't mean she wouldn't defend herself if she felt she had to. It was a Timneh that hurt the conure, although she was defending herself from the conure.

Conures are crazy little things that think they are condors or something!

But, you just never know with birds until they are all in your house and you can see what they think of each other. Just realize a bad injury can happen faster than you can stop it. I'm not trying to tell you not to do it; just trying to help you understand that it could happen. I say if you want a Grey, get a Grey. But know that you may have to let it out separately from your conures.

I hear that Grays and Amazons get along well together. Maybe if I got a baby of each species they'd be more likely to enjoy being outside together? I just really don't want the Gray to be alone when the conures are outside and I'm all up for having more than 3 birds :p

Merlin lived with an amazon and macaw in her previous home and they all got along. I'm hoping now that Pete has stopped making the romantic moves on her that they can start being friends.
