Hi all, I've had my conure for about a week now and since I've got him (today reaaaallly bad) he has been itching like crazy rubbing, today he was rubbing his head and neck all over his perches itching, while making a grovely screaming noise like he's uncomfortable and ******. I'm taking him to the vet this weekend and want to make sure everything is okay because I know petco (where I got him) is known for selling sick birds. Anyone have any idea what this might be? Also, he is puffed up quite a bit hanging out in his cage.

2 Budgies, 3 Cockatiels, 6 GCC'S, 2 Crimson Bellie Conures, 9 Sun Conures, 2 Major Mitchells, 12 Eclectus parrots of various ages, 2 BF Amazons, 2 Hahn's Macaw's, 1 Red Tail Black Too
Bit young for molting however the Petco could have got the age wrong. Check if he/she has any pin feathers around the head & neck if so that would make him about 4 to 5 months old. All you need to do is give him a dish of water to bath in or spray bottle with water in it & the little guy will get busy preening & grooming his feathers himself.

I don't think there is to much to worry about & he could be grooming or cleaning his beak after a feed. Watch at what times he does it, that might give you some indication.

Also forgot to mention, I see you have also written he is fluffed up when in his cage that can be a sign of illness & i would see the Vet sooner rather than later.

Regardless of the age, a proper checkup is needed. We can only speculate but a good avian vet will give you all the scoop you need to know.

I'm glad you're taking him to the vet! Let us know how it goes.

It could be any number of things from molting, to mites, to a skin condition.
I would beware getting birds from a pet store as I "rescued" the most mite infected cockatiel I had ever seen from one.

WOW, how did u know he was mite infected and what did u do to treat?

my two Budgie from a store had all these little THINGS crawling all over them. I bought a special spray, watched a vet video on how to spray it on, then i sprayed them both. i didn't think it worked but after a few weeks they were all gone and NEVER came back!
