Adopted older consure

Hello all,

We adopted a 6 year old Sun Conure from a family that was splitting up and just couldn't provide a home for her any longer due to the divorce. My son has always loved birds he's 6 as well and has wanted one for the last 2 years. So we took in Sunkissed and she is beautiful. She seems to be a little stressed out and who wouldn't be one night you are where you have been since a baby the next you are in a strangers house. I wondering how to go about making the bird comfortable and providing a good home for her. The cleaning of cages and all is the easy part, but how do I go about getting the poor little lady to accept the new family and all. She is eating and drinking and playing with her toys but if anyone walks to close to the cage she fluffs up her feathers and just seems really stressed. I've told the wife and child to just let her have some time to adjust, and I have sat a distance away from her that doesn't get her all excited and I've talked calmly to her. Just wondering how long it might take to get her comfortable enough to where she wants to come out of her cage. Thank you for any help.

You can't really predict how long it will take for her to settle in and trust everyone. Sitting in the room talking to her is a good idea. You can also try singing, sitting on the floor in front of her cage, and playing games like peek a boo, hiding under a blanket or behind furniture.

She may come around in a couple of days, or it may take weeks, months or even longer.

Also eat in front of her and offer her some of your food.

Congratulations on your new friend. I too received an older bird, same age. I have now had jasper for about 3 months and his transition was fairly easy for him. The thing I tried most the first few weeks when he would let me is just carry him on my shoulder. Once he started to trust from there we started training. Just like Roxy said just speak nice maybe try and see if she will walk up onto you or your hand.

What a beautiful name. You are on the right track when you say just give her time to adjust and not push her. Everything is new, inclulding her flock. If you go slowly you will be rewarded with a wonderful bird to love.
