Feeding question - oranges, are they safe... and

if they are, mandarin and clementine oranges, should one wash them and put the whole thing in the conures' cages to let them peel or should they be peeled beforehand? (or peeled initially, later to remain unpeeled so they have to work to get at the yummy within?)

Thanks!

Oranges are safe. I buy the sliced dehydrated ones and give as a treat.

Re: Feeding question - oranges, are they safe... and

As previously stated, oranges are fine but you only should feed fresh oranges in small quantities due to the high acid content. For example, if I am eating an orange, I will share several little bites with my GCC and usually Molly just gnaws on one or two small pieces to get some juice out.

Re: Feeding question - oranges, are they safe... and

Alex likes oranges and mandarins in moderation. They are a little to acidic for daily eating for him! I don't give seeds or peel, just the fruit/flesh itself, diced up into chunks he can grip and gnaw on it easily. Usually Ill give him a few chunks along with apple or something so he can have his pick.

I would peel them unless you grow them yourself and know that they haven't been sprayed with a pestacide Alison and sweetie pie

Re: Feeding question - oranges, are they safe... and

Yep, safe! I can peel a Cutie (aka mandarin) and Loki might gnaw on one little slice out of the whole thing. He just wants the juice, but being small, Conures don't need an entire orange. Cuties don't come with seeds, so I don't have to worry about that. Loki gets a few slices every few days.

I read before that all fruit seeds are poisonous for birds, I don't remember where I saw it though.
