I just got home from the store where I purchased a sand perch for my GCC at the recommendation of the Vet yesterday because her nails are a little sharp and all I have in her cage are rope and natural wood. My husband and I both noticed upon opening it that it has a strong odor that smells like mothballs. Is that normal??? I don't want to put it in her cage if it has been exposed to something that could be bad for her. Anyone have any advice???

Sand perch as in the kind that go over another perch? They make perches for feet but if you are at all questioning the safety of what you have purchased I would return it pronto.

You will find these on mysafebirdstore.com

JWPPS - Jungle Walk Pedicure Perch Small
The Junglewalk Pedicure Perch is designed to simulate such textures for birds in a domestic environment. Unlike conventional perches, the Pedicure Perch trims nails and beak, stimulates leg muscles, and promotes healthy feet. The perch is easily installed and removed for fast cleaning with soap and water. Recommended for small birds, such as parrotles, lovebirds, cockatiels, budgies and similarly sized birds.

It's not one of those ones where the sandpaper stuff goes over the wood perch. It's more similar to what you pictured only skinnier. It says "sandperch" size regular for parakeets, cockatiels and similar sized birds. Since mine is a baby she is very similar to cockatiel sized. I found a link to one at Petco online which I posted. I purchased it at Petco in the store.

Why not let the perch air for a day or two and see if the odor goes away? It may have come from the packaging (some plastics can have a strong chemical smell). If the odor is still there after a day or two, though, I'd play it safe and return the perch to the store.
