Fresh fruit and veggies?

My 4 month old GCC doesn't eat fresh fruit or veggies. We offer her grapes apples broccoli etc and she doesn't eat it. She only eats the custom blend pellet/seed mix that the store gave us. Is that normal for them to not eat that at only 4 months? I'm kinda worried that she's not getting enough nutrients. Advice please!!

Re: Fresh fruit and veggies?

just keep trying introducing them to her. It helps if you take a bite of whatever it is you are giving her . I like to boil sweet potatoes , mash them up and add tiny bits of chopped broccoli or whatever other veggie you might want to.
She is still young and they don't always take to the fresh stuff easily. I'm sure she will come around : )

Re: Fresh fruit and veggies?

Persistence pays off-- you have to keep offering the same foods, over and over. It can take months for a parrot to decide to try a new food (my Quaker parrot Ralph took 8 months to decide that broccoli isn't so bad after all ). Be prepared to waste a lot of food along the way. You should try preparing vegetables in different ways-- both raw and cooked, larger pieces, mashed or finely chopped; that way, you may hit on something that your Conure will like. And it does help to eat some of the same things in front of your parrot, and act like it's the most delicious food you've ever tasted. Parrots usually want to try what we're eating and enjoying. Good luck!

Re: Fresh fruit and veggies?

As the others have said; persistence, persistence, persistence!! My Fids are 1 & almost 2 and they still give me trouble with the fresh stuff. As has been stated, sometimes I get them to eat things if I take a bite first.

Keep trying and try lots of variety. Maybe you just haven't given her something she likes yet? I'm always trying something new for my babies. Just today we bought a few dried apricots and Sugar loved them! Never tried it before, but figured I'd give it a shot. Glad I did! Hopefully yours will get there soon as well.

Re: Fresh fruit and veggies?

Sprinkle his regular food over the new foods you want to introduce. Also try putting it on a skewer. You can also rub tiny bits of the food on his beak and he will see that it is food and that it tastes good. I just weaned some baby lovebirds and that's how I got them to eat fresh foods. They also took right away to lettuce hung from the side of the cage.

Re: Fresh fruit and veggies?

My bird was kinda sorta like that at first. What worked was setting a half fresh apple out on the bar... He plays around on the bar when I'm in the kitchen...
He tears apples up now. But don't leave it out when he's not chewing on it. Put it in a plastic baggy and refridegerate for later or else you might get fruit flies. He tries anything when he sees me cutting vegs in the kitchen. I comes to investigate. I don't even have to try GIVING him vegs now.
But try setting the apple out where you know your bird will investigate.

Re: Fresh fruit and veggies?

When I see threads like this, they surprise me, but I was lucky when Hiccup choose me, cause the breeder/rescue guy gave her fresh stuff and she's never been to picky. As long as she either sees me eating it or it's put into the little crock pot I got for her fresh food, she'll try it. I'd try putting the new stuff in with his normal food
