Lily-Sun/Green Cheek conure Hybrid March 30 hatchdate<3
I've got a new little baby Suncheek conure, a Green Cheek and Sun Conure hybrid.
I have yet to know the gender, and a blood test is being sent today. He/She is a veeery beautiful birdy, with really nice colors. :3 He's more on the green cheek side. There isn't a lot of sun conure color in him/her aside from yellowish green coloring and some reddish on his belly. He's more on the quiet side and doesn't screech loud like a sun conure, either c:

Here's a picture:
Bird-Suncheekconure.jpg

Right now he doesn't really have a name. If it's a male, his name will be Oliver. If it's a female, her name with be Lily c:

So anyone else have experience with this hybrid of conure? I am very aware that health problems are possible. Does anyone know what sort of health problems?

I personally would never breed hybrids but that is a cute baby. I wonder what he/she will look like as an adult, sun conures go through a big color change from baby to adult, I wonder if his colors will change too? How old is he/she?

He's about 2 and a half months old. His hatch date is March 30th. The couple who gave him to me have one that is about 2 years old and his colors are pretty similar, so they might not change at all or very much if they do. c:

I'm quite surprised by this, I really didn't know that aratingas and Pyrrhuras could hybridize. He isn't a suncheek though, suncheek is actually a color mutation of the green cheek conure. I suppose technically you could call him that but it may give you conflicting information. I was looking around and there doesn't seem to be too many photos of this combo but those I did find all look more on the green cheek end of the spectrum. Are the people you got him from the one's that bred him? Was it an intentional pairing?

The couple did raise him and his sibling, there were two babies. It wasn't an intentional pairing though X3 They were told by the vet that their sun and gc couldn't produce babies, so they allowed them to cage together and then they did produce babies XD A few years ago, they had 6 babies. Three died, one was stepped on and the other two had health problems. So far this little baby is nice and healthy and is acting just like any baby parrot, wanting lots of attention haha

He is really cute.
Unfortunately with hybrids, they will usually be sterile and have health problems down the road. Hare they selling the babies???

What kind of health problems do hybrids face?

I don't know about this hybrid specifically, but some other hybrids have problems (I think it's lions and tigers, for example - ligers keep growing and get so big because they lack whatever it is that stops their growing normally, so they die very young). However, many hybrids do not have any issues at all (mules, for example, are sturdy as all get-out).

It would be good if it was sterile actually, then it cannot breed and dilute the genes.

He/she is awfully cute!! Definitely looks more GCC than sun.

No, they're not selling them. They give them to close friends since they're unsure about their health.

The "sterile" comment was more for an Aviculture point of view regarding the future of each species.

It is believed that hybrids have a weaker immune system and a shorter life span.

In this case of an accident breeding, I agree that these babies need their chance at a good life no matter what and this one is a cutie! :)

What a CUTE little bugger! Beautiful colors! Unfortunately I don't know anything about conure hybrids. Did he/she come from a breeder? The breeder might have the best information regarding this hybrid.

Sorry to bring up a slightly old post...

I do know of other "sun cheeks" - although I have never owned a hybrid myself. If it helps though, other photos of sun x green cheek hybrids (first link also lists other green cheek hybrids)

Flickr: Search Hybrid Parrots

Flickr: kim0024's Photostream

I can pull up more photos from two different sources as well.

Only health problems I am aware of are birth defects (feet) and high chick mortality rates. I don't know if said offspring are sterile or fertile. The story about how the hybrids came about sounds pretty typical of all the other hybrids of the same type! More or less, people were not aware that it was possible, and it happened.
