ok, this COULD all be coincidence, but Mave's a pretty smart little guy so I don't know. Over the past few days when we have Mave out, I have been getting him to "hop" from one hand to the other (it's a cute hop too), or when he is coming out of his cage I will see if he will hop, since step up he has mastered. Well, earlier, I had him on the bars to an excercise bike and for kicks decided to see if he would come when called (I have read a lot that says recall is an important thing). At first he looked at me like I was nuts. Finally I looked at him, held out my hand, and called him again, and after seeing my hand he flew AND landed ON MY HAND. After that he climbed right up to my shoulder, which I figured he deserved, I was SO impressed. We will see if he can do it again at a different time, but I was SHOCKED. Definitely a good shocked. If he can learn that without treats (just a lot of praise) and without formal training, I am excited to see what I can teach him to do :D.

That's GREAT! :D It might have just been a fluke, but with some more training, it will definitely be mastered!

Have you thought about flight recall training? :)

We have a little ways to go for flight recall (his flight feathers need to grow back). We tried it again a couple times last night and he definitely knows to fly to our hands. I had my boyfriend try it to see if it was just a fluke with me, but nope! He seems to really get it :) .

My Lucy recently learned to do this on her own. While it's great she's able to do this, it can be bad since she is learning she does not need us to come get her out of the cage and for her to move around.

I had a bit of a scare yesterday when I had her outside on the balcony and she decided to takeoff on her own. I had to run down to the first floor to get her. Just be aware of what your bird is capable of.

Thanks for the word of warning, it's something to think about. So far he can't really fly, as his wings had been clipped, but he's getting the hang of gliding in the right direction.

That must have been so scary for you when your bird took off! :( we rent a house and so far Mave doesn't come out of his bird room sans cage because of the other animals adjusting. He loves it though, he eas watching baseball with us last night :)
