Corn Cob Litter - I've just read that bacteria can breed in it like crazy. But if it's separated by a grille that the bird can't get at, does it make the litter any safer?

In the past, I used corn cob litter from Petco that also acted like an odor eliminator but I've switched to unscented. There was no harm to the birds, but it saved money in the process.

If, with the grate in the way, the corn cob litter is still a big danger re: bacteria, should one then move to aspen or other wood shavings? Or just use paper towels or newspapers? There's a reason for a newspaper subscription... :D

My birds never get in the floor of their cage. I use potty pads (doggie) on top of the grate......saves the yucky mess of cleaning the grate. If your bird gets in the floor I don't know if it would be a good idea as they might shred it. Change it every morning.

Between the potential for mold and the cost, I would stay away from corn cob bedding. Also keep in mind that cedar wood shavings are toxic. I use newspaper and change it out/wipe down the grate every day or every other day because both my birds like to play on the bottom of the cage. It's cheap and you can just fold the mess up and throw it away.
