first off let me start by saying hi, I'm new here :) We don't have a bird yet, but am hoping to get a GCC. We were at our LPS and saw they were having a clearance on cages, would this work for a GCC? Avian Essentials Play Top Bird Cage Kit, Bird Toys - FREE Shipping. Low Prices. The one I got is a couple inches smaller, it’s 23” tall, 17.5” wide and 13” deep. I hope it works cause I already bought, was a steal though, came with perches, ladder, bell, toys, etc. Got it for $35. I'll probably get one bigger later on, but will this work for a baby?

I talked to a local breeder here and she said it would be fine for now since I'll be getting a baby, but would have to get a bigger one later

It may be ok for a few Weeks, but not really any longer.. They need quite a bit of space to move around! You could maybe look into a larger second hand Cage.. You can sometimes pick them up very reasonable!

That cage is incredibly small. If it were me I wouldn't even put one in there for a few weeks... They say 18" by 18" is the MINIMUM but you should really go bigger than that. They're active birds and need enough space to stretch their wings and move around a lot. If you get that cage he's going to have to be out of his cage a lot so he can move around more. How about [ame="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00176F5L0/ref=dra_a_cs_mr_fd_it_P1400_1000?tag=dradis-20"]this cage[/ame]? It's the one I'm getting and it's of great size and good price.

That cage would only be ok if all he does is sleep in it. That means he would need to be out of the cage all day long and that requires a lot of attention and monitoring. A healthy bird needs room to move around and explore. By the time you get two or three small toys and your GCC into it you will see how incredibly cramped he is. Please get a larger cage for your new baby that you will grow to love with all your heart and he will depend on your for his every need!

20"x20" inch would be fine if he was out for at least 5 hours a day because conures are very active and need lots of space. I would highly reccomend you get the a&e flight cage because it is the perfect size if you can only give 3-4 hours a day of out-of-cage time. And you have you think about the possibility of you having an emergency and needing to go somewhere causing your conure to be locked up for a day or two, that's when a 20"x20" cage won't suffice.
The a&e flight cage is 32"x21" and only $150 which is cheap for the amount of space you get so I highly reccomend getting one for your conure, after all it will be his home and you don't want him to be cramped.

In addition to the A&E cage already mentioned, look at the A&E Elegant Flight Cage (available from My Safe Bird Store, a forum sponsor). It has external access feeder cups, which is a nice feature. You might also want to look at the Marvelous Pet Supplies Gable, Veranda, And Veranda Open Top cage models, which are available online from Petco; they are super easy to assemble (and disassemble for cleaning).

We believed we have a huge cage for Puffin plus he has a large play stand at work that he is on during the days when I take him. We went to see a new avian vet today as the last one I took him to made him bleed when she clipped his claws and I lost confidence in her. This vet told us his cage should be wider rather than higher which was the first time I had heard this.

I asked if the size could be why his tail feathers are always messed and she said no it was more likely because he has his wings clipped and they don't have as good a hold on their perches and tend to fall more often than unclipped birds. Has anyone else ever heard this?

I've never heard of wing clipping affecting a bird's perching ability (and really can't see how it would, frankly). But your vet is spot-on about low, wide cages being better than tall, skinny ones. Birds tend to spend most of their time near the top of their cage; a wide cage therefore gives them more space that's actually usable.

For both my quaker parrot and my redbellied parrot they each have a flight cage, white in color they are 32 inches long 20 inches deep and 35 inches top tp bottom of usable space, for a total height of 59 inches on the stands with wheels. They also have a flat top which I like. They were 119.00 with free shipping from Ebay. Plenty of room for the birds and all their toys. From MSBS I ordered a double deker playstand that sits on top of the cage or you can take it with you. Very happy with these for this size bird.... Alison and sweetie pie:D
