Apollo the sun conure. Hatched in mid-January.
I found a couple of fleas where my dog was laying on the living room rug. I want to use vaccuum flea powder, but my sun conure's cage is in the same room. Would it be safe?

I reaserched it and some places said that it is safe for all animals including birds, but i dont know if i would really trust that.Is there any possibility that you could move him somewhere else while you are doing it... because i know i would definetly do that..

If you use it, you should open all the windows and move your bird another room or even better, outside in his cage. Just move his cage on your porch or lawn while you vacuume He should be safe and enjoy the sunshine :) but make sure someone is watching him and you don't let him out without a harness and keep him in his cage. When your vacuuming, air out the house and leave the windows opening before letting him back in. Good luck :)

I can't comment on the safety of flea powder with birds, I just wanted to tell you what I do to keep fleas off my dogs. I feed my dogs some garlic each day, and they get Vit. B complex. One of the b vit. repels bug (I forget which one right now). I have never used flea and tick poisons (that is what all powders and drops are) on my pets, and they haven't had even one flea or tick since adding the B vit., and it has been over a year now. Once the garlic gets into the pets blood stream the smell of it will help to repel biting bugs too.

Yes I also read about the benefits of garlic in dogs, keeping in mind that there is a recommended dosage per dog's weight. Didn't know about the Vit.B complex! Need to look into this, that would be GREAT not to put anything on our dog. The smell of the new stuff the vet has me put on him is horrendous!

We use Adams Flea and Tick spray. It is a mist with fumes, but if you move the bird out of the room the mist will settle and dry and not be a hazard. Powders I would think can linger if you don't get them out of the carpet. It also works great on ants.

The garlic would also protect the dogs from vampires.:)

I've found, when I use Frontline or similar on my dog, it also kills the fleas in the house, because the fleas hop up onto the animal, and then die...

Many years ago I had a lot of flea in my bedroom... I treated the cat, and all the fleas went away...

I would try garlic for the dogs first! It is also good for worms. My mom treated her dog's tapeworm with garlic, and it worked great.

If you MUST treat the carpet, I would use boric acid. I see it marketed as roach powder. It has low toxicity to animals, and if it's ingested in small amounts, it will probably be fine. I even tried some when I was a kid. It's bad for bugs because it dries out their exoskeleton, which kills them. At least, that's my understanding.

I have no idea what is in your flea powder, so I don't know whether it'd be bad for birds or not. I have read that if it's safe for a baby, it's probably safe for birds. Would you let a baby (assuming you like babies) nibble on the flea powder?

consider dte (diatomaceous earth)

I also use DE if needed, and on my garden too. It won't kill all bugs, but it does a great job on smaller ones. You can get it cheap at feed stores. Garlic helps a lot, just remember to feed some daily. But once I added the B vits I haven't seen any bugs on my dogs, and we do go for walks in the woods.

What I would suggest is to treat your dogs and cats ( if any ) and then vacuum , vacuum , vacuum and vacuum again , no powders needed . But remember to empty the bin or toss out the bag EVERYTIME YOU VACUUM because if you don't , those darn buggers will just climb right out and deposit themselves into your rugs again.
After about a dozen or so vacuums , you will be free of them :)
We never suggest using any kind of flea treatment powders on rugs , they can cause more harm then good , so please don't use them. Be vigilant about vacuuming and you should be fine. But you MUST treat your animals FIRST ! I prefer ADVANTIX over any other product. I find it works so much better then Frontline ever did. I used Frontline many years back and it never worked completely . But ever since using Advantix , I never had a problem with ticks , fleas , mosquitos ...
If you don't want to use this product through the winter , you can always switch to a heart worm medication that also provides flea protection like Sentinal once a month treatment.
I use the Advantix right through the winter months if we don't have any consecutive days of below 32 degrees because if it stays warmer then that , fleas continue to live and thrive. Below freezing for 4-5 days , those buggers die off.

I would never use any product on my dogs beds , my rugs , or anything else. By doing this you could possibly make things a whole lot worse for the both of you.
Imagine being at their level and breathing in those products for 24 hours a day for days !!
Not a good thing , and they can cause allergic reactions too. No product is safe because they are made to kill something , so use caution when using and apply them.
It may not be as bad s you think either , your dog could have picked up a hitchhiker from the park or woods and carried them in the house , so don't worry , there is a light at the end of the tunnel , just be prepared to be very friendly with your vacuum for a while :)
Good luck !.

I sprayed my house with a Raid product to eliminate fleas in our home this summer. I sprayed parts of my house and kept my bird at the opposite end until I thought it was safe to move him back.

I use Revolution on my dog and cat and it has done a wonderful job.

I'd treat the dog with a spot-on product like Frontline. I would try to avoid treating the carpet, if possible.

I'd definitely remove the bird from the area if I used a powder treatment on the carpet. Even if the chemical is safe, all that fine particulate matter that would be kicked up into the air might be problematic in and of itself. I'd wait until the air had time to settle again afterward before reintroducing the bird.
