sprouts?

I am a new owner of a sun and a greencheek and have been reading about the nutritional value of sprouts. What is a good website to purchase beans/seeds to get started for a beginner?

Sprouts are essentially live bundles of pure nutrition, for all birds.
They contain digestible energy, vitamins A, C, E, B, minerals, amino acids, proteins and antioxidants , which have protective and disease preventative properties. Sprouts are also stuffed with digestive enzymes. These enzymes break down the food consumed, making it absorbable.

I am in Pittsburgh, PA. Can I just buy seeds from the petstore and do this or is there a special kind?

Sprouting for your parrot,  eclectus, gouldian finch

I get mine from The Birdbrain, which is the store associated with The Gabriel Foundation.

I get mine from Sprout People: SproutPeople.org They're wonderful. They have huge varieties of totally organic sprouts. I would advise only buying organic sprouting seeds, because non-organics sometimes use bleach solutions to clean their seeds (I wouldn't use wild bird seeds for the same reason, since they might be treated.) Here's my most recent order I got just the other day from Sprout People!:



Lots of lentils, peas, broccoli, grains, mung beans, and other tasties... my green cheek conure goes crazy for sprouts. He would eat them all day if he could! I would suggest this bean sprout sampler:

Also, sprouted lentils with rice are a great people-dish too ;]

I'll second this. The seeds are super clean, sprouting mixes I've had from the bird store have never been an nice-looking as the ones I get from Sprout people.

They make some bird-specific mixes, but I like a combo of 1 part of their San Francisco mix to 1 part Amber Waves mix to a half part shelled sunflower seeds.

I use an Easy Sprout container. You don't need to spend the $10 or whatever on it, but it is very handy.

I will third the use of The Grooviest Sprouting Seeds on Our Planet! They are great. I use them for all my personal sprouting needs too. Plus they have a wonderful Yahoo Group that you can join. These folks are diehard sprouters and know every thing there is to know about sprouting. They will help you out all along the way. And when you sprout for your bird, you can sprout for yourself also at the same time. They have many recipes on their website on how to cook with your sprouts. Robin

I purchased the 2Lbs of "Lil Bird" Lil Bird Sprouts and the "Easy Sprout Sprouter" Easy Sprout Sprouter

It's a cinch to have sprouts ready in no time at all and they even have good training videos. My babies have sprouts with every meal and 2lbs of the sprouts will last a nice long time!

It's not rocket science, and I can say that with some confidence, having been a rocket scientist!

My sprouting routine is basically:
Put some seeds in Easy Sprouter. Rinse three times. Cover with water, add 6 drops of grapefruit seed extract. Ignore for 8-12 hours. Rinse 3 times. Shake water out. Ignore for 48 hours. Transfer to container and put in fridge. For the birds, you can feed them as soon as the little tails start to show, which can be as early as 24 hours, they don't need to "grass out".

OK, if I think about it, during the 48 hours, I'll rinse them and shake the water out again twice a day. I've yet to have a crop "go bad". Well, except the mung bean sprouts I was growing for me, those seem tricky to get plump and white.
