I have a 6 month old dusky conure, and am thinking about bringing home another one. However, I'm not quite sure how to successfully introduce birds to each other. I really didn't want to buy another cage, but don't know how else I can get around the added expense.

Any suggestions for me? My dusky is not DNA'd, but I suspect that it's a 'she'.

Thanks!

I personally don't think you should introduce any new bird into the household without at least keeping it separate for awhile, so are you talking about buying a new permanent cage or a temporary cage? If you're short on money, I got my 30x18x18 flight cage from a bird fair for $30, or they're $50 at Petco.

A flight cage would probably be doable. But how likely is it that introducing two 6 month old duskies will work out successfully? And do certain sex combinations not get along well together? Neither conure has been DNA'd.

Thanks!

Those I can't answer, sorry, but just wanted to let you know about the flight cages. My GCC is in one and it's fine- I think Duskys are slightly larger but at the very least it could be a long term temporary until you can save for a larger one.

As far as I know, conures tend to get along with each other, but that's all I can give you, sorry!

Chichi got along with my lovebird. He loved him. And now he gets along with my IRN, they are in the same cage together, I don't know if it's just him or all conures tho. Good luck!

It's going to vary based on personality, unfortunately.

Some individuals of some species will seem to get along better with others...

I've 4 parrots (see list above).

Scooter bonds with Rusty but will allopreen Rosie.

Rosie will fight Rusty whenever (s)he gets a chance. And Rusty loves to invade Rosie's territory.

Rusty and Scooter allopreen me.

Rosie is scared of human hands, but always hangs upside down or does somersaults to gain and maintain my attention. I know she has issues, but she's overcome a LOT of them and has bonded as much as her damaged psyche can allow her to do.

Tybbi is too new but he has shown territorial aggression against Rusty and Scooter, but Scooter too has shown aggression (probably territorial). I'm not trying with Rosie.

Maybe with time, I can get (most) of them to be out of their cages at the same time, but for now I "timeshare"...

My parents have cats. Once they brought in another as a rescue. The new one terrified the two existing ones, so the new one went back to the agency. Years later, one died so they adopted two kittens. The other old cat, who was a rescue from an abusive environment, is bothered by the newbies because they want to play and he doesn't (and one of the newbies wants to be dominant...) It's been 3 weeks and the old one has been slow to change, but some progress has been made. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them...

Sadly, the only pet that gets along with everyone is a dust mite. :(

:18: That's the same way things are in my house! The only common denominators at my house are mites and me. :sigh:
