Advice please!!!!!!!!!

I have a sun conure and he's not the most social bird I've ever seen and I've heard that birds learn very well from other birds?! And I am considering getting another one a local breeder has chicks almost weaned... So my question is.... If I keep them in separate cages will that keep them from bonding to the point of wanting nothing to do with us??

Re: Advice please!!!!!!!!!

Hi Jess,
I'm new to the site and only reading other posts so I'm in no way an expert and still only a beginner myself.
I have similar issues with my grey but from what i've read i think you may be introducing possibly more problems i would have thought and not really addressing the problem which may prolong any issues the bird has.
As i say i may be completely wrong as i'm new also but perhaps someone else with more knowledge on the breed will offer better advice.
I have only been studying the Afn greys but it seems from posts i've seen the same advice has been coming for this type of problem and it would look like its you and the bird that need to get bonded better before other things are introduced. I know that possibly is not what you want to hear as your most likely trying all that already but from what i have learnt bird respond to regular lifestyles and build on that once they know what comes next, more so if they associate something happening, good or bad and remember. hope that helps for what its worth. I may get flamed by someone shortly but i see your not getting a reply.
Sparks

Re: Advice please!!!!!!!!!

If you do get another one, they will likely bond together and you may be left in the dust. That's not to say they won't be social with you, but when they have a friend to hang with all the time, they usually wear each other out and there's no energy left for you. If you like bonding, I would only have 1.

Re: Advice please!!!!!!!!!

our conure clings to whoever carries her around the most...

yesterday she stayed on my shoulder for a few hours at a time, all day

well untill 4pm when my kids got home,
and now today...
shes chasing me around the house thinking im going somewhere

point is.... she likes one on one attention, an lots of it
thats how we keep her friendly, borderline high maintanence

Re: Advice please!!!!!!!!!

I learned an interesting fact from the vet the other day. Birds in the wild spend 2/3 of a day foraging. That is a HUGE jump from the typical pet parrot that plays with toys in their cage. They have a lot of energy and need to exert it, or it will lead to behavioral problems.

Re: Advice please!!!!!!!!!

How long have you had the sun conure again? How old?
I think i'd give it more time in bonding with you before getting another. Georgie was moody and had her moments where she just wanted to do her thing and not be touched but she would often give in for something she really liked (kisses, head scratches or the opportunity to win a reward). She was only so so with other people touching her though. She generally only wanted me to touch her. She also tended to like it all on her terms.
If it hasn't been that long with your bird and if the bird is young, i'd say give it time and keep trying. S/he will come around i think.

Re: Advice please!!!!!!!!!

Are your birds wings clipped? if not get them clipped then start stick training, find my post "Stick training Described" if that doesn't fill in all the information you need post again and someone will help
