Sun Conure- Emmy
Hello Everyone,

I am in the process of choosing my first parrot. I have been researching all the types and thought I had it narrowed down to either a cockatiel or parrotlet. The first parrot that made me want a bird was a Sun Conure we had at work (I work at a large chain pet store). Sun Conures are beautiful birds but they are exceptionally loud!

Anyway, I wasn't ready or educated enough to take on the responsibility of something that would be with me into my 60's so the first Sun Conure went to a good home while I learned more.

The bird's replacement was another Sun Conure and 2 GCCs. The new Sun Conure and I have bonded quite a bit and it's obvious to everyone that I am his chosen person. He is very quiet and only calls out a bit in the morning, late at night and 3-4 times during the day typically when he sees me walking by and wants attention Will he stay this quiet or once he hits maturity will he end up like the one before him who squawked and screamed all day?

The GCC is nice and seems to like me and I like him. We just don't have the close bond the sun conure and I have.

My questions to all you experienced conure owners:

1. Will the sun conure I'm in love with stay quiet or will he end up as loud as the first I knew?

2. Will The GCC ever bond as closely to me as the Sun Conure?

I don't have experience with Suns, but I do know that birds tend to take awhile to adjust fully in a new environment, and tend to be quieter the first week or so. How long has he been in the shop? And how old is he now?

I think you and the GCC could form a nice bond, however if you and the Sun have a better bond now I would go with him. Or if the noise is really an issue but you like conures, take your time and meet more GCC's. You might click with one, and they will be quieter as a species then a Sun. Just because you didn't bond with the GCC's at the shop doesn't mean another one won't be the "it" bird!

I have a Cinnamon GCC (Honey)
and a BCC (Conrad)AKA Connie
GCC (Jinx)
3x Goffin2 (Liam)(Mya)(Goose)
2x B&G Macaw (Cozzy)(Blue)
From what Ive heard from friends who have owned more bird then I have, birds tend to get louder around 6month to 1 year as they get more mature (same with bites, they get harder in that time) My Cinnamon GCC doesnt really make a lot of noise unless there is something noisy in the room with him. example, he really doesnt like the vacuum or the mixer, so he makes more noise when they are on. I have been screamed at by Sun conure and I think with the right training you can break them of that habit. Remember the louder you responde to them, the louder they get. Im just giving ideas as Ive only owned mine for 3 months, so Im new to this as well

I don't think he'll get louder. maybe a little while getting used to the new surrounings but if you don't run to him everytime he screams he should stay quiet espessially that you have a bond too so that would help with the transition:)

I have a GCC and a Sun. The Sun is definitely more vocal, but it doesn't go on all day. He's usually loud in the mornings when he knows I'm getting his breakfast together and sometimes in the evening, but he has his quiet times throughout the day. Between the 2, he's the lover of the bunch so all the kisses make up for it lol.

No 2 birds are ever the same so it really just comes down to preference. On another note, I think any bird given time can bond with you, but there's a different bond when one takes to you right off the bat so you might also keep that in mind when choosing. My GCC tolerates me and anyone that shows her any attention (she's a real snot lol), but my Sun will only love on me and rarely has anything to do with anyone else. Good luck and keep us updated :)
