Possibly Adopting Conure

I just saw an ad on Craig's List with a 5 yr. old Sun Conure. He/she has plucked on chest supposedly due to the death of another bird the first owner had. The bird is only partially tame. The current owner (has had for 4 months) wants $160 no cage. I have a cage & I have the time & money.

My questions are:

1) What is a fair re-homing fee for a 5 yr. old plucking conure?

2) Can a 5 yr old 3rd or 4th home conure be hand-tamed with the proper patience & work?

3) What is the proper quarantine time so my Amazon isn't exposed to anything.

I want to take the bird because the current owner is moving & can't take with them. Why they would get the bird in the first place when not planning on keeping forever is beyond me.

I don't want the poor bird being bounced around to another 10 homes with uneducated owners that don't really care.

Advice/Answers please???

That's a jenday conure, not a sun. If anything, a sunday conure (hybrid jenday x sun), although with the plucking, it's hard to say for sure... but the face says jenday! Sunday's usually have the face of a sun.

Whatever fee you are willing to pay. Has the bird had a health check? What's the current diet? What does the bird eat?

Both my conures that I have/had were older second hand, plus birds. They were given to me for free, one in very poor health and the other in great health, minus getting into trouble in his foster home and costing his foster parents at least $500 in vet bills... If I were to pay for a second hand plus conure, I'd be looking to pay up to $200-$300, maybe more depending on the health of the bird and what comes with the bird.

2) Can a 5 yr old 3rd or 4th home conure be hand-tamed with the proper patience & work?
With the right work, any bird can be tamed! Sometimes, it takes the right person! Expect the worse and hope for the best! Use positive reinforcement/

Minimum 30, but 60-90 with blood work and fecals would be ideal/best... and that is assuming you can quarantine in a room with separate air systems.

Sometimes, life happens. Unexpected things can result in animals finding homes when otherwise they'd never leave their current home. Maybe she's moving somewhere that doesn't allow pets, and she doesn't have the money to find a place that allows pets? Moving out of the country? Moving in with someone who doesn't like pets? Who knows.

Sometimes, it's better for the bird to find a new home than to remain with their current owner. Nothing against the owner perhaps, just what would be in the birds best interest.

Aww he's cute:) i would think the bird is only about 4-6 months judging by the pics unless there old. he looks very young i don't think he's that old inless he's a jenday but that wouldn't be right since he has a couple yellow feathers on his wings? maybe a hybrid between the two? not sure but being young is a good thing with the hand-taming and such. i would say proper quarantine is 90 days. some people say 60 but that depends on what you think is sufficient. I would ask alot more questions about him since they seem to be misinformed about the poor baby. but if it were me i would get him:) i'm sure you can fix the plucking with lots of love and training. and PATIENCE! good luck:)

Oops we posted at the same time haha!

Thank you both! I can easily do a 90 quarantine provided they're not moving before the end of my cruise. I'll scoop him up & shower him with love like I did Mr. Precious.
