Is the fruit instant oatmeal safe? Like apples and cinnamon?i eat it every morning and chichi runs all over the cage begging to be picked up to get some. Thought I'd check to see if he can have breakfast with me.

Mickey - Female U2 age unknown. DNA test came back...he is a SHE,

Tinker 12 yr old female GCC

Chiquita 16 yr old Female U2 and Junior 16 yr old Male Grey
I've always heard that instant is too fine, and could set up in the croup.....I've never given it to the fids...they get whole cooked oats (the "old fashioned" kind)

I'd be interested to see if anyone does feed the instant....cause that would be so much easier.

Yeah! That's why I'm asking. I get the instant because I have 2 kids to get on the bus and one to therapy for half the day. Plus I get the fids veggies for the morning but not until after I get the house emptied and my belly full. So I just don't have time for the old fashioned kind. But would love to be able to heat some up for me and just give a spoonful to them from my bowl. Makes perfect sense to me! I. Ire someone will chime in.

I also read from several postings online that instant oatmeal can be sticky and clog up the crop. Same with rice. They say oatmeal rolls might be a little better.

It may be fine as a tiny treat, but ideally, the kind you cook on the stove would be best... that is, no/very little additives and no sugar.

Yeah a little too much sugar but you could give just a taste (ie. less than a teaspoon) has never seemed to hurt Bogart.

Pritti (Cherry-Head Conure) -- Fly in Peace my beautiful boy. Forever I'll love you.
Pritti sometimes has some of the instant flavored type with me, but it is always the high fiber kind, and it's not really fine and mushy like the other. He gets maybe half a teaspoon or less. Also, you could take a small amount out of the dish before it gets completely to the regular consistency, that way it's still got a little bite to it.

The only bad thing I can think of is the sugar in some of those things. I usually get plain instant oatmeal and add my own stuff (cinnamon, etc) to it.

Yep, i think the sugar is what makes is a little bit of a 'naughty' treat food, but not specifically BAD. I think most of our birds like the "naughty" yummy stuff best. (Don't most of us?) As long as they eat their good nutritious normal diet, a little nibble of sweet stuff from time to time should be safe.

Loki has shared my instant oatmeal and has never had a problem. It's not something I eat or buy regularly, but I have and he's eaten some. No issues. It is most likely too high in sugar, but I see nothing more "fine" about the Quaker Instant stuff than the "old fashioned", so I'm not sure what anyone is constituting as "fine".
