differences between green cheeks?

Hi everyone!

In the research process of deciding our next bird (of which the green cheek is a contender) we're trying to find information on if there are discernible differences amongst the green cheeks, plain, pineapple, yellow side, turquoise. I've read that pineapple are the most shy for example.

Does anyone feel there are characteristics particular to a certain color mutation?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum:)

IMO, apart from the Sun and Jenday most GCC are pretty placid.. I have also heard that the Pineapple is the most mellow.

I never knew that about pinapples!
My Green Cheek Blue conure is pretty placid, although he does have his moments. Although I think it's hard to say as they all have their own invividual personalities.

I have got a Pineapple GCC, he is far from shy, he will happily annoy anyone wether he has met them before or not. He is quite quiet, never really has squawking fits (except when hes sleeping, he does sleep talk quite alot) and is happy to sit with anyone and preene himself/them.

I think each bird is an individual. but that the gcc's as a whole would be similar regardless of color mutation. just pick your favorite color and enjoy:D

This. I don't think that their color mutation has any real bearings on the personalities.

I think it's best with a GCC, to decide what color you think you'd prefer, but go spend time with a variety and you'll find that your decision should be based on the individual personality of the bird.

I agree with KatherineI: each individual bird has a distinct personality.

For what it's worth, my recently adopted 2-yr-old turquoise GCC is an incredibly sweet, quiet bird. Wants to live on our shoulders, preen our hair and ears, and shred a little paper. I've only heard the occasional peep--he is really quiet. (Of course, this is in comparison to our Amazon, who is quite vocal!)

I breed them and I get 8 different colors. It is all just the bird not color. I had 3 normal Turq. In a clutch 1 was very laid back and 1 was into everything, very jelouse and a handful. Third 1 just wanted to cuddle. All the same mutation or color all different personalities. As far as pineapples being shy? Never heard that, I have always heard they r the red heads of the bunch and r fireryer but never shy so that is very odd to me. All my pineapple babies r very out going and fun.

Jonny, you're GC looks like a yellowside, not pineapple.

I've heard differences between blue quakers and green quakers, but never heard about personality differences between the different GCC mutations. There are different subspecies of green cheeks, although I fear that they have all been hybridized in the USA, so if there were any personality differences between them, albeit minor, who'd be able to tell now?

Sun and Jenday Conures are not in the same genus, let alone species, as green cheeks. GCC are in the pyrrurrha genus.

It is possible for other traits to "hitch a ride" with the color genes, but I think with GCC you won't find any verifiable facts about this, only opinions and anecdotes to sort through.

I'd say GCC are typically very active and feisty. Mine is more of a handful than our much larger Cape.

I am actually, quite aware that Suns and Jendays are not in the same genus! but all said and done, they are still Conure's!...

They just happen to be alot louder than GCC's.

I was clarifying, because that's not what the sentence said and the OP may not know.

I think "conure" is a useful term, but there are people who argue that lumping the Aratingas and Pyrrhuras into the same category is taxonomically inappropriate. They have a lot of characteristics in common, but they also have very many characteristics not in common. Body type is substantially different, noise level is substantially different, etc. They are not as closely related as "Macaws" or "Amazons" or most of the other terms we apply to cover a group of closely related species. Still, most people know the term and I really don't favor the approach that says we should call them all "parakeets". The fact that Wikipedia calls them all "parakeets" is a case of the strident minority winning out of sheer tenacity. Why anyone would want to trade a nonspecific categorization for an even less specific one, I don't know.

But I don't think a conure is a conure is a conure. I think the Pyrrhuras are substantially different from the Aratingas, and I don't have enough exposure to Nandays, Patagonians, etc to have a feeling if they are very similar to the Aratingas or not.

I know you hate it when I'm pedantic, but I'm just trying to be accurate here for the record.

There wasn't much science there. Just a rightful clarification that indeed could have been confusing to bird novices. Chikimonkey is trying to choose between Green Cheek Conure color mutations which does not include Suns or Jendays.

I raise GCCs and each bird has its own personality, color has nothing to do with it.

Whoa! Hijacked thread...

I've never noticed a difference between the colors of GCCs. My ex has a turquoise who is very mellow and friendly. This bird has a brother who is the same exact color and is the total opposite. Franklin (my ex's bird) loves to cuddle, is relatively quiet (he is a bird after all, and all birds make noise) and is friendly. Frankenstein (the brother) is a rotten mess and extremely loud. They were both hand raised by the same lady in the exact same manner and ended up being totally different. That's why my ex chose Franklin over Frankenstein. They looked exactly alike, but had opposite personalities.

If I were you, I'd go spend as much time as I could with any GCC and see which one you like the best or which one "picks" you.
