Sorry for my high-pitched voice, I just make it a habit when i'm around animals in an effort to be less intimidating. I know... I never try to force her to play with toys, and the camera makes it look like i'm holding the toy way closer than I was. What are your thoughts? Assistance is wonderbar! (The video is a minute and a half long, you can just skip to the second half to see her play with it)

I think you're trying way too hard. If you look like you're having fun with them, Kiwi might want to play with it. But you should ask yourself, what would you think of this dude waving noisy things in my face.

The fact that Kiwi ran from the toy at first and then dove straight at it might mean that she felt threatened by it and tried to get away, and then when it kept approaching, she attacked it to defend her territory.

That that's how my GCC plays with one of her favorite toys hanging in her cage though. She sits under it and kind of swats at it like that, batting it back and forth and then "catching it" and biting it. I guess--think of a kitten playing. It's essentially "hunting" a toy. Playing and attacking can often look the same with birds too.

Maybe a way to find out would be to hang the toy outside of Kiwi's cage but somewhere she goes a lot, like that playstand on your table, or tie it against one of the panels that open vertically when you open the top of the cage, and see if she approaches and plays with it. I wouldn't hang it IN the cage until I knew she wasn't scared of it. If she ignores it but doesn't go out of her way to avoid it, she may still warm up to it later on. If she gives it a wide berth, she's probably scared.

Thanks a lot. That's kind of what i'm thinking too. Normally, i'm never so forceful, and I try to show her how much fun it is to play with (put it in my mouth) etc. but she kind of attacks it. I bought her a foraging toy, and she destroyed it in one go while I was gone and now she doesn't really touch it (she also broke the bell off). I'm going to keep what you said in mind.

Another problem that I have is that she doesn't play with toys when i'm in the room. Sometimes when i'm in the kitchen I can hear her playing with them, but only that foraging one.

I appreciate your answer!

I think Kiwi was running away from a monster that is bigger than Kiwi in size. It's too bad it was attached to your hand. I think her interaction with the bell was more of a bold attack/warning. Maybe you can just hang the toy in a corner of the cage, or lay it down in Kiwi's play area for a while so she can climb on and observe over time that the big monster doesn't actually move and chase her all over.

Kiwi is brave and very precious.

You can rub your finger or hand on it without moving it and make 'nice nice' sounds for a few seconds a day -- "nice toy" "awww" -- that sort of stuff. Kiwi might get the message after a while. Pritti takes between one and three weeks to warm up to new things -- always been like that.

Mine does that too! If I even look at her while she's playing and she notices, she'll stop playing and come over to me thinking I'm going to give her a treat or something. Did you recently get Kiwi? A lot of birds don't play very much when they're new to an environment or if they've never had toys before. A store owner/bird boarder told me that very young parrots also don't play very much because they're devoting energy to learning to eat, forage, etc. Dont know how much of that is true, but it could be! :D

Thanks a lot. Kiwi is very brave. She is a weird bird, and I am a new owner. I learn a lot about her every day. Her reaction in this video isn't as it usually is, and I think you are right. She has started to play with other toys in the cage a little bit. I appreciate your help (everyone).
