maroon bellied conure
I got my maroon bellied conure a couple of weeks ago and asked about this before I bought him but I just want to check with you guys and get your thoughts.....

When my girlfriend goes away I always go and look after her apartment. Its usually for 3 to 5 days max. Coming up we have three such occassions including Thanksgiving and Xmas.....

I plan on getting a second smaller cage for his short trips there and I bought one of those large plastic pet carriers at Petco. However I am just worried about taking him on the train (takes about 20 mins) and walking with him to her apartment (another 20 mins).

I dont want him traumatised....and of course if you have been following my other posts...the first trip next weekend involves a trip to the vet to get his wing checked out.....

I think the vet trip for his wing flicking is important so you probably should not move that. You could try to cover his cage during the trip with a nice thick blanket to drown out the noise and lights. Give enough opening for ventilation. Give him reassurance once in a while by sticking your finger in. Don't bother with a water dish, just let him drink before you head out then leave chunks of apples or any fruit/veggie for the trip. That will serve as his water. Provide his fave treats and toys.

As long as the trip and the stay is not stressful, he should be ok. Provide him a lot of reassurance and cuddle time and play time in between and he can get through it ok.

Edit: Aldo ginger in case he has motion sickness. I heard it works. My bird likes ginger but never used it in that situation.

I bought a smaller cage for car rides too and mine hated then cage. Anytime we went anywhere he loved to be on my shoulder just looking out the window :) If we did put him in the cage we didn't cover it (he would freak out)

Our Quaker routinely travels with us on 4 hour trips. She does fine and eats in her cage and seems relaxed. She doesn't like to come out and look out the window--the moving traffic scares her. We give her veggies for water and put water in the crate too (some does spill, but who cares). She likes to peek out and be spoken to during the trip. I would be more concerned about the weather and catching a chill. I would definitely have a small travel cage and a good, solid blanket to keep in warmth and keep out chill.

Our bird has duplicates of her favorites in her travel cage and that seems to keep her content too. Good luck!

Jasmine has a small carry cage which I put her in regularly and make it a fun experience for her. We go out on the garden in it and for short car rides. It isn't something that only will come out for eg vet trip so I'm hoping she won't be fazed by a longer trip to our static caravan in the spring!
