My SIL has offered to give me her sun conure. She is just about 1 year old. (I will have to get an exact hatch date from her) She is the only bird in the house right now but came from a woman I concider to be a questionable source. I would never have bought a bird or even any supplies there. How long do you quarenteen the birds? Until vet oks it?

My Male BFA is an only bird. He isn't happy about the dog who moved in to HIS livingroom. I am not sure about adding another animal just now. I want her to get a good home though. She needs a pelleted diet and fresh veggies and fruits. Right now she is on seed only. She is a sweet little thing and likes both me and my DD. Would having a female bird of another species make my BFA more hormonal once he hits that age? My BFA,Oliver, is only a little over a year old. My DH is wondering if they would talk to each other in their own little birdy language and sort of keep each other company. I don't know.

I don't know anything about the sun making your BFA more hormonal, but quarantine is typically 30-45 days. How long has your SIL had this bird? If it's been more than 30 days, and the sun has had no contact with any other birds in that time, it's safe to assume that she's clean. It's still a pretty good idea to get her vet check though.

She has had her for 6 months or more. She is the only bird.

Good rule of thumb - Vet check, 30 day quarantine, second check by vet ..

I know someone who has 3 conures and 2 'zons (and 1 Mac, and he just lost one of his other conures) and he has a great flock dynamic, but we also call him "The Bird Whisperer" because he is amazing with birds ... there is no telling how two birds will react to each other, just like there is no telling how two humans will react to each other ... RIGHT NOW, I don't see favorable conditions in your flock dynamics ... you have a territorial 'zon and a sun who will be a velcro-bird ... not a great combo.

You have, in your BFA, one of the HOT 3 'zons and he is not hormonal ... yet (usually in the 3-4 year old range from what I understand) you do need to understand that male 'zons tend to get aggressive and protective when they get hormonal (females tend to get "nesty" --- cuddle, preen, comfort, care for me) ... you NEED, let me say this again - NEED to address his territorial-ness sooner rather than later ... (make sure he understands that everything is for the "good of the flock" and not for his benefit) .. because when he does become hormonal and he doesn't understand that concept ... you will have a bird that you will not be able to handle.
