I can't believe it, he broke it! If you didn't see my earlier thread, he was flying into my moms room and got partially closed in the door...After that he wasn't putting any weight what so ever on it so we took him to the vet ASAP. They looked at it and showed me and it was all bruised, so they wanted to take xrays. So we had to leave him there for a couple hours and when we came back it was confirmed that he broke something in his femur (it has some long name that i dont remember). He has a big cast on his leg and wants so bad to be better...hes trying to fly and climb but the poor guy cant! :( Hes mostly focusing on chewing on his bandages though which I guess is a slightly GOOD thing because hes not thinking about anything else :p Its so sad I cant stand it, because I have to lock him up so he doesnt get hurt more when hes trying but he doesnt wanna be!! Its really sad :(
The only thing I dont know what to do about is his happy hut...the vet said to put his perches low so that he doesnt fall so far if he loses his balance but his happy hut obviously hangs on top so I dont know what to do....Im thinking of just making the bottom of his cage really soft but I feel like that wouldnt help a ton...any ideas?? :/

I've heard of people putting plywood on slates so that the bird rests on the upper part of the cage and can't climb.

Oh feel better Sprite! Don't feel bad, it was an accident (though I bet you can't help it huh?) For the Happy hut.... Do you have any thin dowel perches you can attach to one side of the cage, slip the quick links through and, since the dowel perch goes through the length of the cage, attach it to the other side? Hard to explain... Do you get it?

I've had to deal with several broken legs and if it makes you feel any better, they do heal very fast. A few of the ones I've had were babies that got stepped on too hard in the nest and one linnie that got his band caught on a cage bar :( Every time it has happened we get it casted and then 3 weeks later the cast comes off and as long as it was casted properly and the cast doesn't slip while healing the bird heals just find and you would never know the leg was ever broken. Put his perches and bowls down low but don't be surprised if in a day or two he is perching just fine on his one good foot. Also, it isn't normally necessary to have an xray done, you can usually feel exactly where the break is just by gently running your fingers up the leg. And with most birds the entire leg gets casted regardless of where the break is so it doesn't make too much of a difference as to wear the break occurred, the treatment is the same regardless. Give him lots of extra cuddles and yummy treats and keep a good eye on the cast and he should bounce back in no time :)

Glad you took him to a vet and they could fix him up!

You can hang the happy hut down low from the side of the cage... and look into getting platform perches!

Oh noooo. Broken bones are made to heal, or something like that. You did all the right things to get Sprite fixed up so that he'll never remember he had a broken leg later on. All will be well. Keep him busy - maybe some extra chewing things to keep him busy and off his cast -- some raw leather strips, or make (or purchase) some simple foraging toys/boxes/pouches.

Making bottom of cage soft is a nice idea. Maybe just the areas under the perches.

I use the kind of hut that has the stiff sides and bottom for Pritti - maybe you can pick up one of those - or even make one with some safe cardboard and wrape it in some safe soft material. Then you can stand it on the bottom if you want to try that. You could even just cut out some stiff clean corrugated cardboard the size of the "walls" and put them inside to make it stand up and see if sprite will still hang out in there. you can cover them with a small piece of towel or fleece material.

Get Well Sprite !!
