Hello! I just found out I am getting young weaned Green Cheek Conure in 2 weeks! I was going to get a Lovebird (hence my name), but something about the GCC's kept calling to me...i love how they look like little hawks. Their facial expression just melts me!

ANYWAY, here is my question: the breeder is DNA'ing his 4 babies, and he wants to know if I want a boy or a girl? When i planning on getting a LB, I definately wanted a boy. But what about the GCCs, do the females get as hormonal and crabby as the LBs do? Or does it just depend on the bird's personality? Would a boy bond better with me, since i'm a female?

This will be my first bird, so I want it to be a good experience. I want to be the best birdy mom I can be! I told the breeder I didn't really care, as long as the bird seemed to like me when we first meet. I was planning on letting the bird pick me. But now im wondering if a male would be easier..?

What are your thoughts?

Females can lay eggs.... beyond that, conures are practically identical in behavior. That means that either one could bond well with any human and either one could get hormonal.

I was given a mitred conure that was supposedly a "man's bird" but in reality, he's a "one person bird". That is, he doesn't like strangers, but once he's bonded to someone, he sticks around them! If someone else wants to handle him, it will take weeks for him to warm up to them... and that is with frequent daily, hands-off kind of interactions.

I would suggest, if possible, going and meeting the entire clutch and seeing which one bonds with you the best!

Thank you, MonicaMC, thats what I'm going to do. I hate to think I might miss out on a little sweetheart female, just because I was set on getting a male. I really do want the bird to pick me!

Now if i can only get thru the next 2 weeks! I spend all my free time watching GCC vids on YouTube, and researching all I can. I am even dreaming about GCCs! My husband and I have started a name list. At least now, we'll know if we have a boy or girl and can give him the right name ;)
