hello, i havent been on in a while but i have a question how do you guys deal with drafts my bird is about 5-6 feet away from the front door it gets cold sence i live in michigan. it is getting colder out and its about 40-50 degrees usually. will this be a problem haveing him this close and what can i do to help with the drafts . i have tried moving him but theres just not enough room for him to go any where else ( with his big cage) .thank you for all your replys and concerne in advance

hi i live in michigan and by me its about 35-45 degrees and their about 8-10 feet from the door and their okay is your door secure as in it wont let in air and out. i still think you should move it a bit more back just to be sure

My opinion? As long as he's healthy, an infrequent draft probably wont harm him. Birds have down feathers for a reason. If they get cold, they know how to keep warm. As long as he doesn't experience a drastic temperature change for an extended period of time, he'll be fine!

I've taken my conure from inside temps (60's-70's) to outside temps as cold as below freezing for a few minutes at a time! And he enjoyed it!

Birds come from the out doors. They have to deal with constant temperature and weather changes. Some more than others. As long as your bird is acclimated to some temperature change, he'll be fine!

If you are worried though, you can always cover the cage side that is closest to the door to minimize drafts. I just know that my birds have enjoyed sitting in front or near an open window with the breeze coming in!

My nanday cage is next to the patio door and has a slight draft. I've been looking for some kind of insulation to put around the slide area of the door. After Hurricane Sandy and no electricity for a week, I taped up the cracks with packing tape lol. I am looking for a nicer way. I also put a thick throw over the side of the cage that is the closest to the door to block the draft. My bird loves being in that spot to see out the window.

I have been wanting to buy this "under the door draft blocker" but have not found it. I have seen it on tv and it looks good.

Home Depot or Lowes has them. Where are you in NJ, Conuregirl? Did you deal with any damage? I'll be heading down the shore on Monday to pack up the rest of my things and help clean out our houses. Not looking forward to this nightmare!

From what I have been told Oil based radiator heaters are the best, along with Ceramic heaters. As long as you burn it for a few days in your garage to allow them to Off-Gas before you put it next to your bird cage.

I still hate how no one can give a good answer on what heater is bird safe. I got two oil based radiator heaters and one ceramic heater. I hope that they work fine, because my bird is coming home today. It get's cold down in the basement where I live.

I'd say ceramic would probably be the safest since there aren't any fumes. I have a ceramic heat emitter bulb that I use on occasion that I've never had any problems with, but the heater I use to heat my apartment is natural gas.

My place isn't that drafty and my maroon belly conure and I survived Sandy too even though it was getting pretty chilly and the power just came back on in time for both of us!
My building has the standard steam heat but it can be unpredictable and goes from too cold to over hot so I turned off the radiator in the main room and use one of those electric oil filled ones which controls the heat by thermostat....
For the draft you should get one of those door guards from a hardware store or as previously said Home Depot....
