Hoping really really hard to have a birdie in a few weeks. As of right now I have an EGG! (well not literally with me;)
Hello Parrot Lovers!

Just got back form meeting with a local breeder and can I just say; "I had the best time!"

I walked away more confused than EVER!

I think I am going to go with a Conure, I've been looking around and I love the colorful ones (Sun Conure, Pineapple Greene Cheeked Conure).

I do have some questions for those of you who already own Conures. I know they have the ability of learning tricks and speaking, but my questions is how well and quickly they can learn?

Also, I know they can be very noisy at times.

I just reallly want to hear about everyone's personal experiences with the beautiful :rainbow1:creatures =)

I have a Cinnamon Green Cheek Conure and she is my life! LOL! I could not imagine my life without her. Conures make wonderful additions to your family. Conures pick up things quickly. I have Cooper potty trainer and it only took about 2 weeks. She can also shake you finger and wave and that took about 1 to 1 1/2 weeks. It is all about repeat repeat repeat and a treat! Cooper learns by following what I do, so if I want her to try a food I taste it in front of her and say yum and she is willing to try it. As far as noise Cooper doesnt really make alot of loud noises, but I have heard that Suns are more louder then others. This is a wonderful place to explore and get tips on questions you have and tricks to making toys and recipes for your flock member... Good luck and dont hesitate to ask questions on here, everyone loves to help new members :) Post pictures so we can see your new baby :) GB

It all depends on how much time you're willing to put into their training.
i spend about an hour a day with mine on training (spread out in sessions)

Pip picks things up fairly quickly. he does roll overs, high fours (since they just cant do high 5's) he does chin ups on his perch, touch (target) wing stretch, turns little cirkles, and a few others. but they are high energy and they need to be able to channel that, so a lot of out of cage time etc. otherwise you get a frustrated ball of energy in a cage...

Still if it's your first bird, id recommend a gcc over a sun or especially a mini macaw.

Tich. A Green-Cheeked Blue Conure. Hatched 6th May 2012 <3
I'd also recommend a Green Cheek if you're a first time owner. They are known for their cuddly and clown behaviour.

My Tich picks things up very quickly and has learnt most of his tricks in 1-2 days. He can wave, shake, turn around on my finger and on the floor, flip a bottle cap over, ring a bell, hang off my finger and do a loop around my finger.

It mostly depends on how much time you put into it really. They need quite a lot of time outside the cage interacting with you, and when in the cage they need a lot of toys.

I've had Tich for nearly 3 months (he's nearly 7 months old) and he's started to talk. He can say quite a few phrases so I'd say he's picked that up quickly too, but that's because I spend a lot of time with him and talking to him.

You get what you put in, and they are a joy to have. :]

If you are looking for a talker then the Green Cheeks and Sun are not that type. For talkers take a good look @ Hahns Macaw, Yellow Collared Macaw and Blue Crowned Conure. If talking is not that important to you then look at the Green Cheek or Sun Conure. The difference with those two are only the noise level. So have fun researching and Peace be to you.

My Green Cheek is almost silent. He is a VERY dear little bird, a joy to have around, a sweet snuggler. Suns are very loud! Make sure you watch a lot of YouTube videos of them calling--many Suns are given up for adoption because people realize they can't tolerate that particular screetching. As for talking, every bird is individual: you can't be assured that ANY parrot will talk, so make sure you just pick the bird who picks you, and enjoy the love. :)
