Knuckles: Sun conure with messed up foot

Sarge AKA turd burd: senegal parrot
On around November 23, My cockatiel of at least 4 years old suddenly died. What she did was she spread her wings and tail feathers, lifted her head and breathed rather heavily. Within seconds she was dead. A time after I got a sun conure that was about 5 months old. Within 24 hours, he died the same way the cockatiel died, same position and everything. We checked for any sort of mold, didn't use any teflon cooking, and none of our carbon monoxide detectors went off. We are getting a necropsy done on the conure but I don't know how accurate they are. Is there any help on what it could have been? The conure wasn't purchased long after the death of the cockatiel. We originally thought the death of the cockatiel was due to maybe age since we didn't know her exact age, or if it was due to her diet being mostly seeds. But the conure had a correct diet according to his breeder and online care sheets.

I'm sorry for your losses. :(
I don't have much experience with avian disease so unfortunately I can't help... but I'm just posting to say that I'm grateful that you are getting a necropsy done before buying another bird - It's showing us that you love your pets and you wouldn't allow this to happen again.

Please let us know when the results come in.

I will, I'm just so sad because both the cockatiel and the conure were the sweetest birds you could buy.

You sound like a very caring person - Your cockatiel and conure were the sweetest birds due to your actions around them. Never forget that. :)

I am so sorry for the loss of your two companions.
I was wondering if you burn candles, have scent plug ins, or use cleaning agents in your home? I hope you get some answers from the necropsy, but from your description this does sound like something respiratory occurred.

Did the conure take over the cockatiels cage? maybe something is up with the cage.

I am very sorry to hear about your recent loss. Like Bobioden suggested, did you use the same cage? Best to sanitize it before any new bird is brought in. But yes it sounds like respiratory issue and there can be so many different stuffs. Good luck on finding the answers through necropsy, please keep us posted on the cause....

The cage we got for the conure was brand new, brand new food, dishes, perches, everything was new. And as for the candles, we never had any candles within the vicinity of the room

I'm very sorry for your losses.

You seem like you have a good idea of what are normal hazards for birds. I hope the necropsy reveals something.

Just got word from our vet that is preforming the necropsy. It turns out the only thing that looks iffy with my conure was the heart. He tested the blood, brain, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract. He is going to preform a biopsy on the heart, and we should get some results on Wednesday. I do have some closure, knowing that my room isn't toxic or dangerous. I'm just angry how crappy our luck is, seeing how the first bird most likely died from a heart issue and sunny the day after. Thank you all for all the support and kind words through this tough time.

Where did you get the Sun Conure from? Most of the stores comes with a guarantee, you need to take the vet record in there to get your money back or ask for another bird if it's a heart issue.

The store we went to has been calling the vet all day. Ironically both her and us go to the same vet. She said she's going to replace the conure free of charge with another sun conure, just this one is a bit older by 2 months. She also said she will call one of her main suppliers to ask about the heart issue, due to the fact there's a possibility it's a congenital heart defect. The replacement conure is going to come from a different breeder, who she also deals with. We also still have a deposit on a senegal parrot, so pretty much once everything checks out with both the vet and breeder, we'll get the replacement conure, and the senegal in due time.

I'm glad things are getting resolved!!! Its a good thing the pet shop is trying to find out the issue and is taking charge in resolving it.

I felt bad for the owner of the pet store. It's an independent bird store by us, and all the birds (other than the finches) are each hand raised and have their own time out each day. When the owner walks in all the birds start chirping and get happy. She is a very nice lady and has been keeping us up to date with vets and other care. I would never get a bird from petco or petsmart, they obviously do not care about their birds from what I've seen. The conure she is giving us has an issue with his foot. The issue is more cosmetic than sick. They had it checked out by a vet and the vet said surgery wouldn't have made much of a difference. The conure is a healthy well established conure, so I would like to give him a good life like sunny and bird.

Good luck with your new baby. I'm so sorry how you lost two in such a short span of time. It doesn't sound like the birds had to suffer though, and hopefully the good life they had outweighs the sadness of their loss.

Birds' health can deteriorate so quickly. Don't blame yourself for the passing of your birds. You are a kind responsible bird owner and I'm so sorry for your loss. I know you'll give your new companions great love too.

Sorry to hear of your loss but glad that the pet store is doing the right thing...
I got my conure from petco and I have to say they were pretty unhelpful when he developed a severe wing twitch days after coming home. The twitch is less bothersome now but still there occassionally....
