Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum but would love any information I can get or anyone who can help me.
I am Kayla and I have been looking for a bird and researching them for months(even had my husband tested for allergies)
. I have finally settled on getting a Conure. All the bird web sites are great but I really would like to have a first hand owner experience of what your little buddy is like.
I also am not looking to buy one instead I have been searching for a family who can no longer keep their bird and will adopt it. I think I have finally found one:). Anyway the conure is a cherry headed conure. He looks sweet and from what the owner writes his personality is good he's just "shy with new people" which I don't mind. As I am disabled I have allllll the time in the world to sit with him.
I grew up with an amazon and got to learn how to tell when she was mad or when she wanted something etc.
My basic questions are
How long do conures like to sleep?
Do they like to hang out on shoulders?
As far as everyone saying they are noisy does this mean constant noisy from the time they wake up till they go to sleep or does this mean when they let out a screech it will be so loud it will wake the dead.
Do conures normally like other animals?
Besides sitting with my conure till he can trust me and gently offering him food talking to him etc....is there anything else I can do?
How to tell upon meeting the bird for the first time if hes been abused or he has health/temperament issues?
I'msure I have a million more and I hate to be that person who asks a million things. I just want to know mostly what to expect.

:green1:Thank you -Kayla

Jasmine my pineapple green cheeked conure, hatched 17 April 2012
My little conure Jasmine would spend all day on my shoulder if she could! She is very tame but does shy away from hands coming towards her - I wait for her to hop on. Food is a great bribe and she will let anyone give her a pine nut or sunflower seed! I adopted jasmine from another family who didn't understand birds so it took a while for her to trust me. I did a lot of talking to her - then treats - before I tried my hands. Now she's a cuddle bunny - but only when she's in the mood ;) otherwise watch her beak!!

Noise - well she can squawk!?! But usually only if she can't see me or she is frightened by something.

Thank you that's really good to know. The way people were making it sound my new bird was going to screech and never shut up.

I also have another question how often do you bring your to the vet? Also what are the costs for the vet?

"I also am not looking to buy one instead I have been searching for a family who can no longer keep their bird and will adopt it." Good for you! not many people are willing to adopt they always want the cute little baby:)

"I grew up with an amazon and got to learn how to tell when she was mad or when she wanted something etc." Conures are alot different then amazons but im sure you'll learn his body language pretty easy, they tend to be pretty straight forward(or mine does at least lol)

"How long do conures like to sleep?" Mine sleeps through the night they usually go to bed and wake up with the sun:)

"Do they like to hang out on shoulders?" Like stated above mine LOVES being on my shoulder! he'll do anything to get there:) but if he misbehaves he loses shoulder privaleges(idk how to spell that)

"As far as everyone saying they are noisy does this mean constant noisy from the time they wake up till they go to sleep or does this mean when they let out a screech it will be so loud it will wake the dead." That depends on the bird and how it was raised and treated, some birds are constant noise makers but with some patience and work you could correct that. and yes especially if you get the cherry head or you get something like sun, jenday, nanday etc. they will definately wake the dead! lol

"Do conures normally like other animals?" Most are friendly but i've read alot of stories of nandays biting there cats and dogs and walking away like nothing happened haha! and GCC can be fiesty little boogers if they so please!

"Besides sitting with my conure till he can trust me and gently offering him food talking to him etc....is there anything else I can do?" You could play games! You could hide behind something and pop out and say PEEK-A-BOO! then after a while they'll usually start trying to peak around what your hiding behind like a perch or toy or something not the couch lol

"How to tell upon meeting the bird for the first time if hes been abused or he has health/temperament issues?" Definatley watch how the owners act around him! look at his cage see how sanitary it is, ask what his diet is, and there routine if they have one with him.

"I'm sure I have a million more and I hate to be that person who asks a million things. I just want to know mostly what to expect." Oh feel free to ask all the millions of questions you want! thats what where here for:)

Yoshi - Cinnamon GCC R.I.P. :(
Yogi - Normal GCC
Mine sleeps between 9-11 hours. He has a happy hut in his cage and when he's ready for bed he goes in it and I cover his cage. When he wakes up he usually yells for me! Conures are such amazing pets with huge personalities! They absolutely would sit on your shoulder all day if you let them. Mine isn't noisy at all. He makes the most noise at night when he's getting tired. Also, try giving him carrots. Yogi is obsessed with them. I use a potato peeler and slice of thin slices long enough so he can hold it.

Its ideal to have an anual vet check but i like to go twice a year just to be safe:) the costs depend on where you go and live, I just took Kyro to the vet for a check up and it only costed around $40 but keep in mind if they find a need to do further actions depending on how serious could be quite expensive.

Clover (green cheek conure)
I have a Green Cheek Conure who would sit on my shoulder all day if she could. I don't know if conures are the loudest parrot (green cheeks are know not to be as loud as other conures). My guess would be the screech sound cake make gives their call or screaming a louder more irritating sound then it realy is. My conure is pretty quiet though. But she can be loud when she wants to be. She plays with her toys and I saw her hang upside down on the top of her cage a couple of days ago. The first green cheek conure I had I was just entering high school. He was cuddly and loved to lay on his back in my hand. My curent conure can be cuddly and let me hold her without biting.

Thank you all so much for your help it really made me more comfortable with my decision. I'm going to meet him tomorrow and hopefully bring him home. He's 4 1/2 years old and he is a cherry headed conure. I'm really excited and really nervous. Thank you all again.

Awesome:) He's still young so i wouldn't worry to much about behavior problems as much because they can probably be corrected pretty easily:) I hope it all works out for you! Keep us updated!
