You'll of course what to spend a lot of time around him. If he won't come out of his cage right away try just spending time near the cage talking to him, reading to him, feeding him little treats, and just get him used to your voice and you.

I know with my Sun and Dusky I went through some hell with them when they hit about 2. They were both really cranky and tempermental for almost 14 months. They're past that now and Carlisle just celebrated his 3rd hatchday. Right now it's my least favorite time of year. He's always trying to feed me and preen me year round but the spring is by far the worst with him. I'm constantly having to tell him no! and put him in his cage when he starts acting like I'm his mate. I happen to like my eye lashes the way they are, thank you! He's always trying to preen them. Just watch for behaviors like that. Also, stick to just petting his head if he'll let you. Avoid stroking his wings and chest. I'd say the biggest thing you can do with your new friend is just give him plenty of time to get to know you. My Dusky warmed up to me right away (I'm her second home) and Carlisle look a few weeks to warm up to me (I'm also his second home). Each bird is totally different.

Oh, and be prepared for noise. Lots and lots of ear piercing noise! My Sun is a screamer. He screams when he's mad, he screams when he's happy, he screams when he's tired. He screams for the sake of screaming.
