How do you know how noisy or quiet your birds are when you aren't home?

Was reading a thread today discussing how noisy birds might be under certain circumstances. I noticed there (and in other threads over time) that people talk about how their birds are quiet for the most part until people get home.

Just wondering, how do you know they are quiet (nor not quiet)?

I said that once, and my husband said - how do you know? I thought about it and realized, that I really am basing that on nothing other than my feelings about it, and the fact that he is usually quiet the minute I enter the house.

1 BFA- Kiwi. Hatch circa 98', forever home with us Dec. 08'
We live in a small (13 unit) apartment complex. Most of our neighbors have seen Kiwi getting baths outside before. I've actually asked a few before if he's really loud when were not home. Thankfully, no one has ever said they could hear him inside their apartment, and only on occasion outside. In 5 years, we have never had a complaint about him, so I'm fairly confident he's a well behaved boy when we aren't around.

Cooperarabian & SandyBee's suggestion of taping them is probably the best, but if you don't have or don't like built-in video/audio (laptops) because of hacking possibilities, there are a plethora of free, small sound recording programs you can use a separate microphone with.....

I don't think Georgie was quiet in her youth! LOL My old condo had a huge living room window which overlooked the parking lot for the entire building. Georgie had a blast watching out that window all day. I had people approaching me, saying "you got a bird?" and i said "wow, how did you know?" only to find that they could hear her squawking at them from the lot. oops. Luckily she only did this when there was activity, not constantly. For her whole life, i kept her with a view out some window, and she was always my watchbird.

My father would sometimes cover the overnight shift at work so he'd sleep during the day. He made no noise and was home and in bed before the birds woke up so they didn't know he was home. He said that only occasionally would they wake him up, but for the most part they were quiet and let him sleep. He's a light sleeper so all it would take was one shriek from Carlisle or Kayak to wake him up. He would tell me the only time they would really scream and wake him up is if our scumbag neighbor was playing with one of his many toys and making all kinds of noise screwing around with stuff. They're pretty quiet if nobody is in the bedroom with them. Occasionally the budgies will argue with each other which will set Kayak and Carlisle off. Other than that they keep pretty silent unless somebody is making noise outside. Kayak likes to sing and whistle when nobody is in the room with her.

I'm gonna look in to recording him. I am going to be moving in a few months and don't want the responsibility of a stand-alone house again, so I need to make sure I know what the noise factor will be with Pritti. Sometimes when I leave the house and am outside the garage in the car with the windows closed, I can hear his sqwaking his little head off. Man is he loud!
