Pritti (Cherry-Head Conure) -- Fly in Peace my beautiful boy. Forever I'll love you.
I'll try to keep it brief. Am trying to figure out if I should take Pritti home today or leave him with family.

--For past month Pritti and I have been staying with nearby family

--I want to take him home today, but he has to go back there in 12 days when I will unavoidably be away for about two weeks.

--3 days ago I moved back home and have been getting things in order ther to bring him home too. I go over to visit him daily. He seems to like his new temporary cage filled with toys. His in the same exact spot as when we shared a room while i was there with him for the month. He is getting along great with family and even getting on one person'a hand and snuggling with her. He's eating fine. They keep him company by watching tv with him or reading in room or talking and playing with him. He is in front of nice window and can hear birds outside in trees.

--I want his stress to stay at lowest possible under the circumstances. If he comes home, he'll have his usual big cage but will be in a different room than for past 10 years because we are selling house and changed things around so he won't be in middle of everything when it is being shown.

What r your thoughts?
I even don't know if it a good thing that I keep visiting daily and then leaving. Maybe I should just stay away and leave him be for next 3-4 weeks. I'd miss him terribly, but I want what is best for him.

Thanks.
Wanna.

Imo, the less time you spend with him will not only stress him being in a different home but also would make the stress coming home so much greater. Also, if you go that long without even seeing him, him it could negatively affect your bond. I've had to move with my birds, and had them stay with family, so I understand your situation. I think if you can spend time with him then do and if you can have him home for 12 days do that too. Hope this helps!

What do you normally do during the day.....could you start spending less time per day around him, to get him ready for the two week separation.....two weeks is really not a long time, until 18 months ago a birdsitter took care of my flock for up to 8 months at a stretch as I worked out of the country.....I mad a couple of video CDs & several audio CDs with music & interspersed with messages/conversation from me.....none of them really had any separation anxiety, though on one trip home I made a detour through Houston, picked up a friend's two conures & brought them home with me & the first time my birdsitter played one of the audio discs, the nanday walked all around the sound system speakers, trying to find me.....but when I would get home & walked in the bird room, there would be such a cacophony until I let them all out & they could get on me.....never any real fights, just 16 birds wanting attention.....

If you prepare them, telling them where you are going & that you will be back, most will accept that, though expect him to possibly be a little upset with you when you're finally home with no more separation.....

Don't worry about not being there for a while. Birds do not quickly forget you. Recently I reunited a friend with his Amazon after 8 years apart. The bird was beside herself when she saw him. She squawked, made kiss noises, and other noises neither of us had ever heard her make. She wouldn't get off of him, and wouldn't leave him all day. She has also not forgotten the time her and I had together, and loves all over me when I see her. Take him home for the 12 days, then bring him back to relatives. And get together again as soon as you can.

Hi wanna, I know this is off topic but I noticed that your beautiful cherry head conure is over 30 years old and I was just curious to know if he has been with you the whole time? :)

@birdpassion620. Pritti was brought home as a baby from a little shop by my husband 30 years ago. We met in 1991. So Pritti and I have been together since 1991 (22 years).

Thanks all for your opinions and stories. I have left him for two weeks in the past with his a-vet that's been his dr for 16 yrs. It's strange, but I feel like I don't have to worry about his health when he's there boarding because they are all professionals. But in reality, his mental state is not as good there because he stays in a cage in a nice boarding room with a bunch of other healthy birds. At my family's house, he's got it made. They adore him and are trying so hard to get him to snuggle on them and play with them. He's like their grandchild. He gets loads of healthy home foods. It's just an adjustment in my mind htat needs to take place.

But I have decided that I will take him home for the 11 remaining days starting tomorrow. We do spend a lot of time together, but he's not too demanding about being on me except first thing in the morning and then at our usual nighttime snuggle time.

The older he gets the more I feel overly protective about changes. He's always been a bit on the "wired" side as far as nerves go.
