Hello there everyone :) Some of you may have saw my previous topic asking for help on the conure species called a Sun conure. Well I went and revisited the bird that I fell in love with and I found out he was a Jenday conure not a sun! So I was wondering what was the difference in the 2 types? And the Pro's and Con's of a Jenday conure. I also got to take a picture of the birdy boy name Weezy just so everyone can meet him :D Its not the best picture but it gives everyone a thought of what he looks like. All help welcome :) :orange:
(Sorry for the picture being quiet large)

I understand that all birds are loud now that I have done my research :) Some more than others. I am just trying to see if there is any difference in the 2 types. (Sun & Jenday)

Suns are supposed to be even louder than jendays.

Jendays and Suns are probably the closest Aratinga relatives, and share very similar qualities. I don't own a Jenday (just a Sun) but from what I've read and seen from pet stores, they can be just as loud as a sun conure.

If you have made up your mind about getting a conure, I would skip the Aratinga and go with the Pyrrhuras like the green cheeks. Before you do though, google about the conure's screeches and habits and required care. Show to your mom :) that way your household won't have last minute regrets :)

Good luck on your decision!

I fostered both Sun and Jenday, and to me the Jenday is louder because the pitch is higher and more hurtful to my ears.

Ok so the 2 breeds are very similar, got it :) It's so odd cause I wish I could hear weezy scream but he has only done 2 squawks in the many hours I have spent visiting him. He has been inside the petco for I'd have to say 8 months? In the same cage with the same toys and the only human interaction he has is the people who tap on his cage. Cause well his price tag kinda shoos everyone away.

What does your mom think of a bird? Getting a bird then having to adopt them out because of noise is a very sad thing thing. I remember you saying that your mom doesn't like loud noises.

I recently adopted a Sun conure so let me say greencheeks are the ticket. Not that I will ever give up the Sun because it doesnt bother me that much.
,
The biggest problem is not so much loudness with the Sun, but the constant noise.
For instance the gcc will holler once a day at the most. Some days she is super quiet

Sun conure rarely has a quiet day, and the noise can be very grating on a constant all day level. With quiet times at noon when he sleeps. Mornings are the worst, very loud and goes off and on for at least several hours.

I really think you should go with a pineapple greencheek now and when you get your own house get the Sun or Jenday conure. Its more fair on your mom that way too.Personalitys are very much the same as far as cuddly factor.Although our Sun doesnt cuddle(but he is still new) and our greencheek would all day. I dont think I will ever not have a greencheek conure as long as I live, they are just awesome

My mom absolutely loves him. And at first she didn't like the noise but like I said we haven't heard him at his loudest. But to be honest I think she is actually starting to lean more towards him despite his noise. o.o

In my experience, birds are quieter in a pet store than they'll ever be in your home. At least, that was the case with our lovebirds, parakeets, and cockatiels. The lovebirds were purchased from a pet store by us - they had been silent there - and when we got them home, they became constantly chatty and noisy all day. The keets and tiels were given to us by friends because they also turned out to be louder at home than they were in the pet store. I dunno, they could just be flukes...But I have noticed that all of the parrots at my local Petco are pretty silent, suspiciously so in the cases of the suns and jendays. Its something to consider, at least.

I owned a Jenday and I loved him. He had the sweetest personality buuuut, the loudest voice. After awhile I was the only one in the house who could tolerate it.

I agree. Suns and Jendays are beautiful but if you are uncertain of the noise a green cheek or a crimson bellied conure would be best. My vet owns a Aratinga conure (a peach front conure) and she says her house sounds like a jungle.

I have to wonder if they do not get as loud because there are other birds around? But I know what you are saying.

I do have to wonder if it is the shrill sound. As I stated in the past I doubt a conure can ourdue a too or a Macaw. Anyways, you are right about green cheek conures. They can be loud when they want to be but usually they are quiet.

Suns, nandays, jendays and gold caps can all have really high pitched screams that can be like nails on chalk board! Conures may not be able to compete with macaws and cockatoos in loudness, but they can in pitch! And that's what gets most people! IMO, it's easier to listen to cockatoos and macaws than the screechy conures... but I still love conures!

BTW, it's species, not breed! ;)

As stated, you can get birds cheaper from a breeder! I would suggest looking for local bird clubs or breeders or rescues in your area who would allow you to visit their birds so you can hear just how loud the birds *can* be and decide if you can handle it or not! Essentially, expect the worse, hope for the best, and if there is an issue, be willing to try and work through it! Learn how to take care of bad behaviors before they start!

If noise is a possible problem (on an ongoing basis), you should reconsider.

Initially I had no intention of getting a GCC, I 'settled' on one as the best choice. it sounds awful saying it that way, but to be honest I couldn't do without him now. Parrots grow on you as individuals, regardless of their species - and that's something most people don't fully realise until they have one in their home. That's also what makes it horrendous for you (and the bird) if you have to give him up due to noise.

So many birds are rehomed due to thoughts such as "I want a talker!" or "he's so colourful!". Suns and their ilk can be be burtal on the eardrums, and that can really grate on folk.

To echo Monica's above post, breeders or rescue centres are great places to look. The people there are far more likely to be honest and concerned for the bird's welfare (the latter especially so); most pet shops are just looking for a sale, although I appreciate that is not always the case.

I know this isn't the post positive post, but this is a parrot forum - we care about the feathered folk first. ;)

Macaws honk, Conures pierce the eardrum.

Well, some conures can honk, quack and make chirps like a cricket, too!!! But yes, conures do pierce the eardrum quite a bit! LOL
