I'm planning to get my bird sexed I have the kit for it, but I'm wary as to how to get the blood. The place i go normally to get his nails cut said they could get blood for me but it would cost $20 is there a way I could do it? Without hurting him? I just feel like if I do it or if they do it that it will hurt him:confused:

Some kits you can pluck a couple of feathers from the chest area and send them in.

I can do that too but I'm so afraid I'm gonna hurt him. It says I would have to pull 6-8 would cutting his nails hurt less?

Yes, you can pluck a couple feathers and send them to animal genetics(you can request a free test kit from them)

Plucking a feather(not a blood feather, and not a molted feather) will contain a little DNA on the end that they can use to determine gender.

One person plucked her amazon and said it was fine. I accidently plucked one of Rosie's feather once and she squawked in pain. I think either has it's advantages and disadvantages.

With the feathers there is no bleeding to worry about. Both ways are going to cause some pain.

I'm pretty sure it's easier to cut the nail. I've done it at least 20 times. the first time my daughter helped me, she held the bird, which we wrapped up in a towel, followed the instructions to the letter, and I clipped the nail, just to the tip of the quick.

I swear I was more nervous than the bird!!
some feel more than others, meaning some get upset more than others. some don't even squawk, others scream bloody murder and we haven't even started, lol.
do they remember?....nope....will they hold a grudge, no.
just make sure you have someone to help you, take a deep breath and take your time.
have everything ready before you catch the bird too.

Have you priced it out at a vet? The vets I go to charges about 40 and then there is no need to worry about hurting your bird.
