Conure being extremely noisy as soon as I leave the room

Hello everyone,
I have a green-cheeked conure and he is about 10 months old. He seems to have developed a habit of loud screaming (2 repetitive whistles/screams following another) each time I leave his sight. His cage is in my bedroom and he is usually quite content when I'm there. There are times when I leave for 2-3 days and a roommate takes care of him. Usually he's just excited to see me when I return. Ever since the last time I've been away he immediately goes into a screaming tantrum and climbs in circles around the front of his cage until someone enters the room and restarts the moment someone leaves the room. It's starting to become a problem because I live with roommates, and any noise, music or foot steps that the bird hears causes him to get even louder.

It seems obvious that he wants attention, but there's gotta be some way I can train him to calm down when I step out. The fact that he immediately stops and behaves as soon as he see's a human makes me believe that he is only trying to get what he wants (me to take him where ever I go) by screaming.

I've tried moving him out into the living room, but he still screams, and it can be heard a lot more around the house that way...

Sounds like he might need more interaction and out-of-cage time with you and just hanging out. I have my fully flighted GCC out of the cage whenever I am home and she spends a lot of that time watching me from her cage-top rope perch. It could be that she is comfortable returning to her cage when I need her to because she knows it won't be long until she's out again.:green2:

Hmm. I leave the cage door open for roughly 4-5hrs a day for him to climb about and watch me freely. He loves climbing around my shoulders. He barely ever gives me any problems when I put him in the cage, and usually goes in himself if I hold him near the entrance. I'm going to experiment with some new toys as well.

I listened to the audio and that's actually a polite contact call! Try responding with a whistle or talk to him from the other room a bit. He might need more activity/foraging/TV to keep company. Your bird seems lonely in that room.

When I first got my GCC, she did the flock call/contact call whenever I left her sight. To train her to be quiet, I never returned to her sight until she was quiet for an entire minute. Starting off I would only wait up to 30 seconds of your guy being constantly quiet then walk in as a form of praise. Her cage was in my living room of my apt, so there were times I was stuck in the hall waiting for her to be quiet before coming in :p It took my GCC about 4 weeks to learn to be quiet(er) when I leave the room. But now I have transitioned her to talking with me when I leave her sight. She says "What are you doin?" or "come here" lol There is the occasional loud call, but it's nothing compared to when I first got her.

Conures are naturally noisy. Some South American villages use the as watch birds bec of their noisy response to people coming and going. Mine starts squawking when I pull in the driveway. I'm not sure if there is a whole lot you can do to squelch their natural instinct.
