Goldie- hen Gold/Yellow cheek Cockatiel ( almost 20 yr old) and a newly weaned Lutino parakeet named Boo 2 GCC's Milo-Turquoise and Jada-Pineapple.
My friend gave me two GCC's and well they were hand fed but not handled much after. One is a year old and the other will be 1 in January.

My questions are....
1. Will they tame down?
2. If I do get them tamed down will they be still wanting to breed?
3. How can I encourage foot play?
4. How can I encourage them to expand their space and explore?

Now some background. The breeder kept them in breeder cages and well no toys. They were in a room with lots of other birds. So, they were left to snuggle and that was about all they did. I have lots of toys in the cage hanging and let them out daily. I have some foraging boxes I allow them to have while out of the cage. I have my cockatiel still but she is older and just like to hang out and sit and watch tv.

thanks in advance.

It's not impossible, it will just a lot of time and patience to tame them down. Just keep working with them.

Tame birds breed too, it does not matter if they're tame or not to breed.

What do you mean by foot play??

They will explore on their own when they're ready to. Birds are curious animals, they will explore everything! But only when they're established!

Years ago I got a pair of Conures from a breeder left in the same exact way. But one of them was super curious and came out to explore on her own. She loved coming out to play and be petted. The other one I couldn't get him to do nothing. He was absolutely terrified of everything....

Jada is curious and Milo is reserved.

Foot play as in using their feet to pick up things and manipulate them. Milo will use his foot to snag a nutriaberry and climb up and eat it on a perch. Jada doesn't really use her feet to handle things.
When I open the doors Jada is first out and into trouble. Milo will take a long while to come out.

Hi I have 12 birds [different experiences] and its weird what I found out . If you put efforts into building your bond and them trusting you. Other things naturally fall inline. Like -playing with toys [and checking out their cage] trying new foods ,easily wanting to come to you , saying words [all by themselves] . I think its a confidence thing. Theres a difference in a confident bird and one whos not. So help them out [no pressure on them ] treat them like a celebrity ! :)

Not all birds are the same, Jada may not want to hold things with her foot. Or she may do it when she feels like it. Out of 11 of my Cockatiels, only one will hold food with her foot. She's the special one...lol....But everything else will just take time to establish. :)

thanks for the information. I just find myself doubting myself and feeling like I am doing things wrong. I try really hard to do what is best for them. When we get our new house they will get a room all to themselves and will be able to grow in flight feathers. I clipped them while in the apartment for safety reasons. I know they hate it and I would prefer them to be flighted.

Once you moved into your house they may change from the move! Just wait and see, if still more issues let me know I'll drop by to take a look. :)

Found out today Milo might be a she. Milo wasn't in the surgically sexed group. He was to little. So, we will be doing it this fall.

Thank you Mike for the support.
