Hi. I have an almost one year and 5-month-old green cheek conure, and I am considering adopting two pet rats. I would like advice on whether this is a good idea, or whether conures and rats pose certain hazards to each other. It would be nice if someone who has had experience with both species would offer a word. :green:Thank you.

kept apart form each other (as rats will eat or attack birds) and it will be fine I have so many different kinds of animals at my house and everything is fine.

ow, granted, I have only had Leonard about 4 months, but I keep him currently in the same room as my eight rats. There are no issues other than his desperate wish to climb on their cage lol

With that in mind, I would recommend not keeping rats in the same room as a flighted bird, because the bird will land on the cage at some point, and rats can be FAST. And certainly they should never be out of their cages at the same time.

Many of the things that are bad for birds are bad for rats, though, so as long as all the animals involved are healthy, they can be very happy in the same household.

It's all about controlling their environment. If you can do that with confidence, then it won't matter how many animals you own!

We have 13 animals: 3 conures, 4 German Shepherds, 2 outdoor cats, 2 chinchillas, 2 guinea pigs, and two rabbits. My conures are let out of their cages after my other animals have been sequestered. So far, so good!

Like it's been said, as long as you keep everything in control you'll be fine having rats...After living out in the country side where your house gets infested with mice during winter time, no thanks on rats....lol

Interestingly enough, pet rats can often keep mice infestations away ^_^ Mice are generally afraid of rats, since rats out-compete them, so they'll tend to avoid areas where rats are. And it's hard to find a sweeter pet than a domestic rat! Never bite your kids without provocation like a hamster might.
