Gizmo- Sun Conure
My little Sun Conure has a real bad habit for squawking. He can be on either my, or my partners shoulder and as soon as someone leaves the room he will squawk. His cage is situated in the living room, and our kitchen is about 2 meters away separated by a breakfast bar. As soon as someone goes anywhere else but the living room he will begin to squawk like crazy and won't stop until he is in with the person that is moving around the house. I'm wondering if anyone would know why he is behaving like this. Is it normal? Is there a way to teach him that once we leave the room to not be all voice?
He is currently 16 months old and we have had him for about 2 months now. I've assumed it's him not being too sure with his environment but I thought I'd get more opinions and help.
Thanks!

It's a pretty normal problem, but it's not good either--from what I've hear, sun conures are really loud. :) The best way I've heard of to get rid of a screaming problem is to just ignore it. Your conure is sending you contact calls (in a flock of birds, they do this all the time), and he expects you to call back. However, calling back could be anything for us, like a running sink or any other noise you make. So if you walk out of the room and Gizmo starts screaming, my advise is to freeze where you are so you make absolutely no noise. That way Gizmo learns that screaming does not get him what he wants--a response from you.

I haven't actually ever had to try this method, but it makes sense to me, so I hope it helps. Good luck! :D

Jacob a sun conure who found me!
Julianna is right, mine was a bit loud in the beginning (found him outside), and Id refuse to walk back into my room etc until he was quiet.. I have also noticed that if he don't get enough exercise through the day he gets louder too...

You could give him a treat before leaving the room, he might associate leaving the room with something good, and it will keep him occupied for a few minutes. Then when you come back you can praise him. Just a thought.
