poop and panting

okay guys im freaking out. im typing this with one hand because lukah is on the other. so i was trimming lukahs nails. it went without incident except lukah got freaked at the end and started panting. i calmed him down and put him back in the cage with an almond. he was content< ate the whole almond and played a little then started panting again. i freak, take him out of the cage and hold him. no more panting but he poops and it is light green& white. hold him for 5 min and no panting. put him back in, he climbs around, plays, starts panting again. what is happening? can take picture of poop if need be

Please help. When I put him back in the cage he gets drowsy and starts panting. I don't understand.

he seems fine when out of the cage, but starts acting weird as soon as I put him back in.

I tried but they can't get me in until tomorrow and it's going to be 170 dollars.

oh wow!!! Did they say there was anything you could do until then? Were they concerned with the behavior??? Now I am freaking out for you!

I didn't ask. I told her I would call back because I started crying and couldn't talk.

I just kept him out of his cage for about 10 minutes and just put him back in. He is eating and so far hasn't panted again. I will keep you guys posted.

He is back in the cacge. No more panting but now he is very tired, grinding his beak like it is bedtime and closing his eyes. I am scared to let him sleep though

I wake him up and he preens and wipes his beak on the bars. Still no panting.

Maybe he is drowsy because he had a bit of an adrenaline surge (thus the panting?). I'm definitely no expert so just guessing but I know people get tired after a "scary event" has caused an adrenaline surge. I would still take him to the vet for a check up I think. At least it will set your mind at ease!

Thanks! I think I will definitely take him to the vet, but not an emergency visit. He is no longer panting, but is playing with toys, yawning from time to time and dozing every now and then. And looking at my like I'm crazy for staring at him for so long. I called a vets office and talked to them and they said his poop is probably lighter in color because I did give him veggies or other food today (he's only had pellets and water). And, since he started the extreme panting when I finished cutting a toenail, it was probably due to shock. They said if he is still acting strange tomorrow then to definitely bring him in, but since he seems okay now, he is probably fine.

He doesn't have loss of balance either which is good- he is sleeping on one leg right now as we speak. And he ate pellets after I put him back in, so he hasn't stopped eating. He's drank lots of water today and there is no water around his nostrils or anything. He is just tired now. Although I am still worried about his breathing (if I stare really hard I can notice his tail pumping a bit maybe?) I don't think it is as extreme an emergency as I thought

There's a possibility that he's working you...he saw your reaction and attention to the first incident, and maybe kept doing it because it brought so much focused attention on himself...he probably thought he was doing some awesome trick lol!

hahaha maybe! Though I doubt it because he still doesn't like being out of his cage that much... I think he gets bored! hahaha and when he panted and I went to get him out of the cage he would run away and get very angry!

Okay guys here's the most recent update: He is calm and is playing with a bell. Ate pellets a little while ago, preened a bit, napped a bit on one foot and screamed at me when I walked outside to check the plants. He seems back to normal. Just sleepy- which I think he usually always naps at this time anyway because I'm usually at work from 2-6- plus, like you said, the adrenaline was probably a lot for him. Also it's definitely my fault he got so scared because I moved the tray in the bottom of his cage and that scared him so he flew out of the cage onto the ground. I held him for a bit and then decided to do his nails (mistake). So he was probably already freaked out and then I cut his back nails, so I did it differently than usual (for his front ones I usually hold him on my left hand index finger and hold his foot down with my thumb and then snip but for his back ones (which I've never done before) I set him on the couch (which he didn't like) and held his foot (which he hated) and then snipped. By the second toe he was panting and I stopped.

So I think it was shock and it's my fault and I've learned my lesson! Don't chew me out too badly! I've already spent nearly an hour crying/worrying and thinking he was on the verge of death!

I have heard that accelerated heartbeat and fear can cause panting. Bella was getting her nails trimmed too, yesterday, she started panting! I called my local vet office, however they said just to calm her down and give fluids... She was fine within 10-20 minutes...

P.S. Have you tried Rescue Remedy (pet!!!) drops? It's a natural recipe and calm down your bird. I ordered a tiny bottle and haven't tried it, but I've heard very good reviews.

Never heard of it! What is it and what does it do? He usually doesn't get scared during nail clippings. I think it was just the combination of everything one right after the other and me being a bad owner and not giving him enough time to relax inbetween.

I got worried when my guy was shivering after a bath. I was freaking out myself because he looked so miserable like I was going to kill him.

I looked it up first and was relieved to see that that's what they do when they are wet and trying to warm down. It was normal for them to shiver like that.
I also freaked out when I first fed my guy blackberries. His poop was pure black and it freaked me out until I realized the food changed it's color.

I never thought about a bird would be smart enough to fake looking sick to get attention. Is that really possible?

Yeah it's possible! I don't think Lukah would do it because he likes being in his cage too much haha but I definitely think a bird who liked being out of the cage and knew if it panted or shivered or made a certain noise it would get held might do it!

When I brought Lilo to the vet, they had her in a towl and touched her and looked down her throat and in her eyes and looked at her wings. When they were done, she was panting really hard. They said she is tired from fighting to get away and being man handled like that. After that all she wanted to do was cuddle me! Maybe your bird is stressed or had an adrenaline rush maybe?
