I have a Cinnamon GCC (Honey)
and a BCC (Conrad)AKA Connie
GCC (Jinx)
3x Goffin2 (Liam)(Mya)(Goose)
2x B&G Macaw (Cozzy)(Blue)
so this started at the end of last month, late July. My Black cap conure, Connie, has started acting very strange. Heś 6 years old and has been with me for more then 8 months now. He eats pellets and fresh fruits and veggies. He has never acted like this ever before.

Recently he has started becoming very territorial of his cage, he will lunge at anyone who tries to take him out. He has been ¨Masturbating¨ on his favorite toys, which I understand can be completely normal. For a while once he was out of his cage he was alright to handle, he would be his normal cuddly self. Now even once he is out of his cage he lunges at you, and takes chunks at any chance. I try my best to let him out with his cage partner ( also a male), but he is doing some serious damage to my hands so he has been spending a lot of time in his cage.

I have 3 other conures, all male, 2 green cheeks, 1 feiry shoulder, but none of them are acting like this. I havent changed anything in the cage or everyday activities. The only this is I went on vacation or 10 days, but a friend of mine with conures stayed at my house to keep their everyday activities as normal as possible.

Please I need any ideas or suggestions because I feel bad keeping him locked up but he is malicious with his attacks . He is perfectly friendly to the other birds but hes so violent to me and anyone else now. I just want my cuddly birdy back. Are these breeding behaviours? And, how long will they last? or is he just pissed off that I left him in someone elses care for a week?

It sounds like cage aggression.

Doubled with hormonal behaviors... thats a doozy of an issue.

My personal suggestion and how I dealt with it for my birds was a seperate sleeping area for them. But that can dig into one's bank account... In some instances all you can do is be patient; and deal with it as it comes.

so you think it could be a combination of cage aggression and the hormones, meaning the hormones will eventually subside? I do have a cage I could put him into to sleep if you think that might help I can set it up. Thank you for the quick response

Thats just what I did.

The only experience I have with Conures would be the bird I adopted out to my mother.

My Broto started evidencing Hormonal behaviors a few months ago and I tried a sleep cage.

Other ways are to simply give him his space for a while.. and get him used to a routine time that you spend time with him. Birds like routine I've found might take a few weeks but it could help stave off his attacks.

Just remember to be patient... but having four of the beauties I'm sure you know that already!

I leave mine be when they're like that and once the hormone thing is over they're back to their normal self once again....

You may want to consider removing his "humpy" toys and finding ways to remove or reduce the triggers to him being hormonal.

The triggers been:

- long days (they need to be kept at a solar schedule)
- high protein (conures eat more fruits than anything else so protein intake (seeds, pellets, nutriberries, etc) needs to be measured)
