We are getting our first parrot he is a baby fiery shouldered conure. I was told that wood pellets make a good bedding material, if so can I use pellets designed for pellet stoves?

There's specific bedding materials they sell for pet use. You don't use stuffs that's meant to be used for wood stoves.

Get your bird a Happy Hut. My bird loves it! Should be at Petsmart!

As long as you keep an observation making sure there's no loose strings and such! There's other members posting bad stuffs about them in the past....

I used to work at Petsmart and we used the corn pellets in the aviary's as bedding, they are terrible! They get soggy, birds eat them which can impact their digestive system, they're dusty, really heavy, and it's inconvenient to change which may discourage people from changing it daily. One vital thing is you need to be able to clearly see droppings, that is often the first sign of illness.

I use, and recommended to costumers, newsprint paper. it comes in many different sizes so it's easy to find a close fit to your own cage. Every evening before they go to bed I replace the paper, it's simple and easy. Other members also recommend unscented puppy pee pads. and theirs always good old fashioned newspaper.

Yes, they are VERY dangerous. Members have had their birds strangled, and loose toes. birds may also ingest the fibers, impacting their digestive system. I am always a stunned to see them recommended and used by so many of our members.

Conures are full time cavity dwellers and the use of a tent for sleeping is something I always recommend. As long as you get the proper ones, with invisible stitching and made of fleece, and that you inspect it regularly, there is no problem!

I had my hut for a little more than a year now. Never had an issue! I cut the Tag and made sure there was nothing to snag him. My bird would kill me if i take it out of his cage!

I am not saying that the other members are making things up about what happened, but so many recommend a happy hut because our birds love them and they never have hurt themselves with it. Maybe they are not inspecting it before adding it to the cage? it says to do so on the package.

Most, if not all, the accidents that happened with a hut was with THIS ONE : Bird Toys : Multi Pet Happy Hut Medium Yellow

If you look closely, the stitching has small diamond patterns on the outside and inside the hut. A LOT of stitching throughout the hut. THIS HUT IS DANGEROUS!

If you decide to use a hut/tent, make sure you use a SAFE ONE! They are not all constructed equal. I buy mine from JustBirdTents, made by a bird person who knows how safe it has to be, not petsmart or petco.

I have been using the green one for more than a year now with no issues, but I agree with Echo. Find one that is known to be bird safe.

From my experience I have had no issue with the hut I have been using. I know a lot of other people use this hut as well with no issue. In fact out of all the reviews on Amazon only 3 tell of the horror story.

Has anyone here had any experience with a fiery shouldered conure? Are they fairly similar to the green cheeks.

Baron- That one is dangerous. And I speak from experience. As a Conure breeder, I can only recommend products, then it's up to each person to listen to me or not. Few years ago, I used that kind in one of my cages and one baby was inside, where I couldn't see him. However, everyone else was coming out of the cage to play, so I checked on him, and sure enough, his head was stuck inside a stitch that had been picked at and was forming a loop. If I hadn't been home, he would have strangled himself for sure trying to get himself out!

I only need 1 accident instance to learn from. When I review toys, if there is even only 1 accident, why take the risk when there is so much out there??

I use the kind I use because there hasn't been 1 accident reported from them. The stitching is very minimal, the type of stitch is different and hidden.

I agree with you! I saved your website and I might go ahead and order two tents! I am getting another bird and I might need two huts. Plus this one is a year old so it's about time to switch!

That is the most dangerous, I'm glad your going to order the other type of tent that crimson recommended, It looks much safer. I'm actually wondering if the playpen style might be good for Rosie since she isn't a chewer. Although any sign of wear and it will be thrown out XD

My baby conure gets to come home this Friday and I am busy setting up his home. The ink used for printing isn't harmful for them?

There is a member Chelle who has one. Since they're in the same Pyrrhura genus as Green Cheeks, and Crimson Bellied, they'll probably be very similar for the most part. Lots of related species owners here to help you!

I have a Fiery Shoulder Conure and a Yellow Sided Green Cheek. They are very similar in size and behavior. And they absolutely love their pineapple huts. I haven't had any problems with the huts so far but I do check them regularly! The last thing I want is to loose one of my babies.
