My beautiful SI Eclectus Zephyr and my handsome B&G macaw Vandal, daughter's Sun Conure Loki and son's GCC Blaze
So, my daughter has a male sun conure (born early April 2013) and son has a female GCC (born late April 2013). Once their quarantines were over we started introducing them to each other slowly (since the kids pretty much always have their birds out when they're home, figured it'd be best if the birds got along ^_^). At first the sun was kinda temperamental about it, but that little girl was very persistent. Now they love to play with toys together and snuggle up on the back of the couch. My poor little eckie is so jealous when he watches them play together, but he's so much bigger than them that I'm too scared to let them together.

Anyway. I have a quite large cage (originally purchased for my Eclectus until I ended up finding a much bigger one for him) and I was thinking about letting the two conures live together in it so they'd have company during the day when the kids are at school.

I am just concerned as they are.. well.. a boy and a girl. So far as I'm aware, different species conures are able to breed together and I'd like to avoid that. If I put them in the same cage, are they going to mate? Or can I prevent it by not providing a nest box or something? And will it affect their relationships with the kids?

Yes, conure species can hybridize. No one can say what will or wont happen if you house them together.

This group has some photos of green cheek x sun conure hybrids. Sorry though, Flickr currently seems to be down...

Flickr - Bad, bad panda! Come on. We want photos.
