I have had Felix just a short time but I have noticed his wing feathers are not growing in despite going through an intense molt. He came to me clipped so short he gets absolutely no lift whatsoever when he tries to fly.... I am worried he may have been clipped so short they may not grow back....is it possible to clip a bird so short the flight feathers never grow back???? :(

Thanks for any insights

J

was he on a bad diet when you got him? Rosie recently molted out some clipped secondaries that she's had for over 2 years D: But she's also a larger bird.

If they aren't getting the right nutrients it seems their body may hold back on producing those larger feathers.

Hi Copperarabian

Felix was on a very very poor diet when I got him..... I changed his pellets to Harrisons & his seed mix to Abba pls he gets a large variety of fruits now as well....he hasn't developed a taste for veggies yet.....he even knows veggies are in there if I put it all in a food processor & won't touch it.....

2 years to molt some secondaries??? Holy moly!!!! Well I am a bit releived to hear it can take that long to regrow out those feathers....

I just really hope they do grow out.....poor little guy wants to fly so badly but just goes straight down when he does.... I don't want him to hurt himself :(

It might take a while but he will eventually grow them in. You cannot clip a bird's wings so short that they won't grow back in as long as the skin wasn't damaged. Was a lot of feathers clipped or were they clipped close to the shaft?

Hi thebirdnerd

Both...lots were clipped and all clipped close to the shaft..... I am happy I am getting some encouraging info in that they will most likely grow in. I never clipped my lovebird very short when I had to clip him so Felix being clipped so short is new to me.

you might want to try some featheriffic from avitec. Its a feather supplement that boosts feather growth.. Maybe it will help. Ive been giving it to my CAG with great results.
