Mini Macaw and Conure?

I know they say that different species of birds might not mix so well together, but for the LONGEST time I have wanted a Macaw. I want a Scarlet Winged Macaw, but at this point in time I can not purchase one due to space issues.
I was thinking a Yellow Collared Macaw but I hear they do not do well with Children and being my wife is about to have a baby that will not work.

I than saw the Red-shouldered Macaw and I really like how it looks and from the descriptions sounds like a good bird to own. It's also the smallest and being I have a pineapple conure (a small conure), I thought that would be best.

Thoughts? There is a few videos on the web with mini Macaws and Conures together, but that's with bigger conures like Suns and Jendays. My wife and I agreed that only having two to three birds at the most would be our limit. Being I want a BIG bird one day, I really plan on making our birds a family deal being it's going to pass down to my children to take care of them one day. Maybe not the Conure, but the Macaws would need to be taken care of. I heard the Pineapple can last for a good 30 years, but I hear 15 to 20 is realistic. Is that true?

i have a Sun Conure and a Hahns Macaw now. I just got the Hahns after my black cap passed. she was very friendly towards other birds since the pet shop i go to hand raises their birds with other birds. this Hahns was in with an Amazon.

after only a few days together, they are inseparable. the Hahns has GOT to be wherever the Sun is or she is unhappy.

the Hahns is just a tad larger than the Sun, yet my Sun was almost double the size of my black cap. the only thing i think would concern me about having a Hahns with a pineapple is the beak size ratio. the Hahns has a larger beak than my Sun, even though she is not much smaller than he is, so it would be considerably larger and stronger than a pineapples. i think if you were to get one, they should definitely have separate cages and supervised play time. i dont know if i would trust them to play alone together in case they get into a scuffle..

I have the exact same pairing as above.
My hahns is about 150ish grams at his lightest and is substantially bigger than the sun conure. Especially when you look at the beaks (as said above). My two boys get on ok, but are not cuddly with each other and defend their immediate personal space. It never goes further than that though and they do talk to each other and share toys.

As above my concern would be that there is a pretty big size (and more so strength) difference between a hahns and a green cheek conure. It could very well work but I would advise separate cages and supervision when out together as a minimum. If they didn't like each other you would probably have to go further and only have one out at a time.

Agreed, maybe not the same cage ever, but as play buddies when supervised it should be good! Plus I was thinking of a cage that was around 200 dollars that looked good for both. It would allow them to be in the same cage but with a cage divider.

Right now I am thinking of my child more than anything. I like the height of the cage as it will be off the ground so my toddler can't stick his or hers (don't know yet) finger in the cage. What I have now its very low to the ground.

The problem with cage dividers is that they can still get at eachother through the bars. Birds can lose toes and still injure the other with their beaks. Honestly, for birds of such different size, complete separate cages is a must in my opinion

I can just buy a bit of cut Plexiglass and stick it between. It wouldn't be a major investment.

On the other hand I am going to have a stand open up and might pay some money to have a cage made for me.

Do you think a cage that is only 30in high by 48in long, but only 18in wide will be ok for one conure? It would be a long cage rather than a really wide cage. The one cage I have is only 20 1/2in wide and 31in long. So I wouldn't be cutting the depth that much and I would be giving him WAY more length to play in. He hardly uses the 51in in height he has.

I have a Hahns macaw and I have to agree with everyone that they will need to be in separate cages. Is there a chance a mini macaw would get along with a conure? Yes, but I would supervise them. As already stated throughout the forum there is a link between conures and macaws.

This is the cage I use for my Sun and Quaker.
They each have their own space and can't see each other or get to each other while they are in their cages. But they can hang and play together on top.

I have a Hahns too. My Sun and Hahns like each other. My Quaker likes my Sun but HATES my Hahns.

Hey guys, I've been thinking of getting either a Sun Conure or a Hahns Macaw sometime in the future. I like cuddly birds so I was wondering which of these two parrots is more snuggly? Thanks!

My hahns is snuggly with me but not anyone else. I got him when I was a single guy and was the only one who consistently interacted with him, we are working on it!

The sun has always had me and my better half and gets on well/is super snuggly with everyone.

Generally I think you will always find suns are less forceful and more snuggly. Either species can go either way though depending on the individual and how they are raised.

I would love a Sun, but they are so loud! I heard Hahns can be loud but not like Suns. Is this true? I am not going to be getting this Macaw anytime soon, I got a baby on the way and I am in the middle of upgrading my 55 gallon saltwater tank to a 120 long tank.

So a new bird is on the back burner. I want my children to grow up loving animals and having the responsibility of such ownership, so I am excited that I am about to be a father. I also don't want to over do it with so many animals it's hard to keep a clean house. At least I can put cleaning the cage on the chore list when the kid gets older. LOL
