Hello All. I have 3 conures (Jenday, Sun and green cheek). When I got my sun he was a bit hard to handle but I spent so much time with him and now i can't say enough good things about him. He's not perfect but he's grown up quite a bit.

My daughter recently brought home a green cheek and he's been with us for a couple of months. He bites out of nowhere. When I go to feed him he's like a cling on. He just attacks your hands. When training him to step up he like just clings on to your hands and doesn't let go. It's a fight just to get him off. His bite is worse than my big Jenday's bite. I even have him watch while I train the sun but when it's his turn he's just aggressive. I don't think that he's aggressive on purpose. I think he wasn't taught any manners before coming to our home. He rips treats out of your hand, etc.

Hasn't this bird ever heard the saying, "don't bite the hand that feeds ya"? lol

My Green cheek is exactly the same way. He's the only bird in my house that I can't hold. I should have named him Jaws. :(

I like the name Jaws. It fits. I named mine Bello after a circus clown we once saw. I can pick mine up but the whole time he's biting at my hands. Once in a while he'll calm down if I rub his head and neck.

If I try to put him down it's like he's a cling on and bites me all over. Like one of the velcro mits and balls you had as a kid. lol

They can be bitey little douches, Misha was very VERY bitey but he's soon to turn 3 and has calmed down a lot. They give off a lot of warning signs before they bite, you just need to recognise them, Misha's are very subtle to the point that no one else in the house can see them.
Work out why he's biting - possibly fear? And then take a step back and work out a best approach from there.
There are a lot of really good posts on overcoming biting, it took me almost 2 years to work out Misha completely but it's well worth it, he's a snuggle bug now!

Probably best not to give him a chance to bite to avoid the behavior becoming more ingrained. My GCC is out of her cage a lot, but not on me much of the time and I don't poke and touch her a lot. I've never had biting problems with her.

My uncle has had 3 decades of experience with birds, currently he has a very crazy African grey, I just got a cinnamon GCC, he is a biter also. I asked my uncle what he thought I should do and he gave me two options, both of which work but one is far less painful.

1. Let the bird bite, don't react even if the bird chomps down hard, eventually they learn you don't react and do not give the outcome they want ( which is you removing your hand from their space )and they stop biting so hard, eventually it becomes a nip, and that as well will stop. I know when my Uncle's bird Kazooku bit him he would end up with welts and cuts, but within two days the bird was not interested in biting.

2. If you see your bird going to bite, gently grasp his beak in between two fingers( NOT hard at all, be VERY gentle ) and lightly shake( again be extremely gentle so you do not hurt your little bird ) his beak and say no ( or no biting, gentle but firm ) then let go and remove your hand, wait a few seconds then resume the activity you were doing with him.

Personally, I like the second option better, I find my little Carlos listens, I can begin petting and giving him scritches without being bit for a second time, so far only one bad bite on the first day I brought him home! Goodluck with your little one!
