Tango ~ Sunday conure
Skitch ~ Grass parrot
Lorry ~ Grass parrot
Hamish (RIP) ~ Pineapple GCC
I got my Sunday conure “Tango” from a male breeder about two days ago, he’s ten weeks old and he’s friendly. He’s currently fallen asleep while I’ve been stroking his stomach or back and sits on my shoulder or accepts treats from me , but he screams when my boyfriend comes into the room (I think because the breeder who raised him was a male) and flies to him pretty much as soon as he can.

Basically, hate to sound selfish, but I really want him to bond with me. I recently lost my pineapple GCC to a tumour and she was my best friend. Currently, I’ve been playing songs with female singers to get him used to the voices and singing along with them, as well as talking to him constantly – ashamed to admit, I’ve read him a few chapters of Game of Thrones – also, I’ve made it so that when he’s naughty my boyfriend is the one that puts him away, also he doesn’t feed him anything.

Not sure what else I can do. Should I have gone through a female breeder?

My main question is how long does it take a conure, or a bird in general to bond to a person. I’ve read and heard that once a Sun..or Jenday (SUNDAY! <3) conures mind is made up it’s pretty much done. Also, does anyone else have any tips for me to have him bond to me?

Birds like who they like, it does not matter on the breeder! I've raised birds who will leave me as soon as they find their suitable new owners and most are females. Perhaps get a second bird?? One that chooses you from the getgo....I don't force my birds to like who they like in my home as we have multiple anyways...lol....Some goes to my partner, some will only come to me. I had a Nanday Conure that does the same thing to me in the past, she prefer my best friend and will leave me the moment my best friend gets home. When I moved, I give her to him and he still have her til this day and that was like 13 years ago.

Yeah, I figured as much.

I was just hoping because we'd only had Tango for a couple of days. Oh well. He made a good choice with my boyfriend :D

Thanks for the input!

Rora - it's only been 2 days ! Give it some time, you never know what will happen and parrots can be VERY fickle - my bet is Tango is going to be your NEW BFF.

Fargo's breeder was a male, and he hated everyone, he didn't "choose" me, he wanted nothing to do with me ;) and for about the first week home, you could see that Fargo was more interested in my dad and my brother, he would just watch them through the window and cling to the sides..

But they never came into my room, and they never interacted/fed him, and i was the only one that spent time with him... By the second week Fargo just loved me, after a month you could really see he had bonded... and now we are inseparable and i am the person he has chosen!

I used to read to Fargo as well, and played guitar and sang, he absolutely loved that!!

So just give it time, just be the one to do everything and i think you will be fine :)

I am so happy to read that, you have no idea. Dx ... I feel bad saying that, but I was completely gutted with Hamish passing and I was so excited getting Tango that I felt like I'd gone completely over the top with him, yanno? I can't say I've ever read a parrot a book before, at least XD

I know it's going to take time, I get that, but when he screams for the boyfriend and flies to him when he walks into the room... Well. xD

Hahaha if Tango doesn't 'hate' you, then i think it will all be fine.. Just have to give him the yummy treats and nice head scritches! :)

I had a quaker before Fargo, and one of the thoughts i had when i first got Fargo was 'He will never like me'..

Because i was thinking about how much my quaker was bonded to me?
But i was forgetting the first few weeks where he was scared of me? I was just thinking, oh he loved me the whole time!

So i was just thinking, oh boy, this is a mistake, he doesn't like me, he won't love me...

Just have to remember they take some time before they are comfortable :D

and plus birds are silly little things and he might wake up one morning and hate your boyfriend hahahaha

hey, its only two days, he'll see more of you than your boyfriend, trust me!! ;)

I had the Nanday for 3 years and I'm there most of the time. I'm her main care taker, feed her, giver her treats, etc. She tolerates me and comes out for me. She acts pretty and eats at the dinner table with me. Talks and carrying on. But the moment my best friend comes home, she flies right over to him. That was the end of that, couldn't touch her afterwards. Same with some of my birds now days, a few tolerates me but prefers my partner, vice versa. Like I've said, I don't push them. You really find out what they're like when theres multiple people within the household.

You could limit the amount of time your boy friend spends with Tango. Have him ignore him as much as possible. I know sometimes birds pick their person, but this bird is young and as long as he's well socialized I don't see any reason why he can't be a good buddy to you both.

It's only been two days.. :19:

It usually takes atleast a week for a bird to learn to tolerate its owner, and then weeks or months for him to actually bond to you. This isn't always the case of course, but it was for me. Don't rush it, okay? He's only 10 weeks old; you've still got 25-30 years to get him to like you.

Good luck!

LOL. When you put it that way, Blueridge, it tends to put it into perspective.

Yeah, I'm for sure having the boyfriend ignore him. When he flies to him he gets taken back to me or put in his cage.

Thanks for all the input everyone. <3

I agree with everyone else! You are just getting started and it will take sometime for him to bond to you. When I brought my first conure home she took an immediate liking to my mother and I thought I had lost her for the first year or so. She would still sit with everyone but she always seemed to end up on my mother. What I didn't realize is I was her favorite! I left for 3 months to go to Europe and my parents said she wouldn't talk to anyone while I was gone. When I came back she talked up a storm with me for at least an hour. She now flies along behind me wherever I go (if I forget to grab her before I leave the room). I am also the one who takes care of her and talks to her the most so that will definitely be in your favor if you can limit the contact she has with the boyfriend. My birds are also caged where I sleep so they see me the most.

Good luck! You have many years to win him over:)

Yep 2 days is nothin.

You're about as familiar to him right now as any other stranger walking past his cage.

Will soon have a sun conure
all he needs is time to adjust to his new environment and 'flock' members. I am sure he will love you if you just give him time and lots of scratches:)

Thanks Guys,

Yeah, I just got a bit worried about the one person bird thing. He's settling in fantastically. They are clowns of birds and I adore him already. <3
