Good news for all of you considering the purchase of a new parrot. You do not need a PHD in animal behavior to have a good relationship with your new friend. Patience and a willingness to perservere in what could be a dificult adjustment period will get you further towards your goal than a detailed knowledge of animal behavior. One simple thing anybody can do is just spend time with your parrot. I am not speaking here of giving your parrot your undivided attention. I am just speaking of spending time with your parrot and lots of it. For example right now my focus is on writing this post, however, Cracker is beside me sitting on his perch. I consider this spending time with Cracker. Most of the time if I am at home and not sleeping Cracker is out of his cage. He may choose to stay perched just outside his cage, he may choose to sit on my shoulder, or he may choose to just be in the same room as I am in. Regardless of what he chooses, I think this large amount of out of cage time and freedom were very important in helping me establish a good relationship with Cracker. This is a very simple thing to do. It does not require any brains, and it does not require a PHD in animal behavior. Mostly it just requires time and a willingness to do something to achieve a goal which you consider important.
